Viltrox Air Lenses. The Micro Four Thirds Move Everyone Saw Coming
SHARE

After months of speculation, Viltrox has confirmed that it is stepping into the Micro Four Thirds arena. The company posted a teaser on Chinese social media pointing to an announcement on July 23, and its notoriously chatty Reddit account fanned the flames with a terse “Something new coming soon,” complete with fire and salute emoji.

The strongest rumors point to two familiar names making the jump: the AF 25mm f/1.7 Air and the AF 35mm f/1.7. On a Micro Four Thirds sensor those would behave like 50mm and 70mm primes respectively, giving MFT shooters a compact standard-to-short-portrait pairing. Viltrox notably declined to shoot down that theory when asked, which tells you plenty.

Why does this make sense? These are APS-C-optimized designs, and APS-C doesn’t demand a dramatically larger image circle than Micro Four Thirds. Repurposing them is technically overkill for the smaller sensor, but there’s no downside for the photographer — you get more than enough coverage in a body that stays refreshingly small.

And small is the whole point of the Air series. The X-Mount version of the AF 25mm f/1.7 Air tips the scales at just 170 grams (six ounces), measures 54.7 millimeters (2.2 inches) long, and takes 52mm front filters. The AF 35mm f/1.7 matches it exactly — same weight, same length, down to the gram and millimeter. For a system built around portability, that’s a natural fit.

If these two do become Viltrox’s opening act on Micro Four Thirds, the roster of follow-up candidates is already stacked. The Air lineup also includes 9mm f/2.8, 15mm f/1.7, and 56mm f/1.7 options built for APS-C, all of them featherweight. Pricing has been friendly, too: most sit under $200, with the $239 AF 15mm f/1.7 the lone exception. That’s the kind of aggressive value that could shake up a system where affordable, modern autofocus glass has been in short supply.

One open question remains: whether Viltrox intends to formally join the Micro Four Thirds consortium. A manufacturer doesn’t strictly need membership to build compatible lenses, but there are real technological and logistical advantages to being inside the tent.

The teaser graphic doesn’t spill any concrete specs, and Viltrox has kept the details deliberately vague. Still, the direction is unmistakable — a brand that has spent the last few years flooding APS-C and full-frame mounts with well-priced autofocus primes is finally turning its attention to the smaller sensor format. For Micro Four Thirds owners who’ve watched their system get comparatively few new native options, that’s genuinely good news. The full reveal lands on July 23, and if the rumors hold, it could be the first of many.
