Facebook Verified. Meta puts a face to the badge with a free selfie check

The little blue checkmark used to mean you’d paid up or you were famous enough to earn one. Meta’s newest badge flips that logic on its head. Facebook Verified, which the company announced on July 24, 2026, is a free label that certifies one thing and one thing only: there’s an actual human being behind the profile you’re looking at.

The mechanics are refreshingly low-friction. Instead of uploading documents or forking over a subscription fee, you record a short selfie video. Meta then compares that clip against the profile pictures already on your account to confirm the faces match. The whole thing wraps up in a few minutes, and it costs nothing.

Privacy-minded users will want to know what happens to that footage afterward, and Meta has an answer: the video selfie and the associated facial data are automatically deleted within 30 days of verification. So the biometric check is a one-time gate, not a permanent file in a data center somewhere.

Not everyone qualifies. To go through the process you need to be 18 or older, and your account has to be in good standing under Meta’s Community Standards. Break the rules and the badge stays out of reach.

Where does the badge actually show up? At launch, it surfaces in the corners of Facebook where trust matters most:

  • Marketplace — handy when you’re deciding whether to meet a stranger to buy a used couch
  • Dating — a quick signal that your match isn’t a bot or a stolen photo
  • Groups — helpful for spotting genuine members in busy communities
  • Your profile — a persistent marker for anyone who visits

Meta says Feed posts will get the badge treatment over time, extending the human-behind-the-account signal to your everyday scrolling.

It’s worth being clear about what this badge is not. It doesn’t mean Facebook is endorsing anyone, and it doesn’t vouch for the accuracy of what someone posts. All it confirms is authenticity of identity — that the person on the other end is real, not an AI-generated persona, a scammer’s sock puppet, or a recycled celebrity headshot.

That distinction feels increasingly urgent. As generative tools make fake profiles cheaper and more convincing to produce, a free, fast way to prove you’re a living person could become one of the more quietly useful features on the platform. It won’t stop bad actors from lying about products, prices or intentions, but it does raise the floor on the most basic question every online interaction starts with: is this even a real human?

Facebook Verified is rolling out now, so eligible users should keep an eye out for the option to grab their badge.
