Final Fantasy 17. A festival tease points to a familiar director

Square Enix hasn’t officially confirmed that Final Fantasy 17 exists — but that didn’t stop the internet from lighting up after a panel at the Final Fantasy XIV 2026 Fan Festival in Berlin. The catalyst, as usual, was Naoki Yoshida, better known to the community as Yoshi-P, whose offhand comment set the rumor mill spinning at full tilt.

The reading fans have latched onto is that Naoki Hamaguchi could be taking the director’s chair on the next mainline entry in the series. If you’ve spent any time with recent Final Fantasy, that name should ring a bell: Hamaguchi steered the Final Fantasy VII Remake project, guiding one of the most ambitious reimaginings in the franchise’s long history. Handing him a numbered flagship would be a logical, if still unconfirmed, next step.

It’s worth being precise about what we actually have here. This is a tease, not an announcement. Square Enix has not confirmed a director, a platform, a release window, or even the game’s existence under the Final Fantasy 17 banner. Everything downstream of Yoshi-P’s remark is interpretation — enthusiastic, plausible interpretation, but interpretation nonetheless.

Why does a single sentence at a fan event carry this much weight? Because Yoshi-P has become one of the most closely watched figures at Square Enix. As the man who dragged Final Fantasy XIV back from disaster and turned it into a cornerstone of the company, his words tend to be parsed line by line. When he gestures — even lightly — toward the series’ future, the community treats it as a breadcrumb worth following.

A few things are worth keeping in mind as the speculation builds:

  • The venue matters. Fan Festivals are XIV-focused celebrations, so any mainline hint dropped there is a bonus rather than the main event.
  • Hamaguchi’s track record fits. Leading the VII Remake trilogy is exactly the kind of résumé that precedes a numbered-title directorship.
  • Nothing is locked. Until Square Enix puts out a formal statement, treat the director, the title number and the timing as open questions.

For now, this is the kind of story that thrives in the gap between what a studio says and what fans want to hear. The Final Fantasy community has a long and well-earned history of decoding stray comments into full-blown expectations, and this latest ripple fits that pattern neatly. If Hamaguchi really is being lined up to direct the series’ next chapter, the pedigree is there to make it exciting.

The sensible move is to file this under promising rumor and wait for Square Enix to speak plainly. Given the appetite around the franchise, that confirmation — whenever it lands — is likely to be one of the more anticipated reveals in the company’s calendar.
