LM Studio Bionic. Kimi K3 joins the roster of cloud brains

The agentic side of LM Studio just got a serious upgrade. As of July 27, 2026, Kimi K3, Moonshot AI’s frontier open model, is live inside LM Studio Bionic — arguably the most capable open-source model you can point at real work today.

Bionic itself is still fresh, having launched on July 16, 2026. The pitch is simple: it’s an AI agent built for open models, aimed at coding, research, and the fiddly business of creating and editing documents and files. You can keep everything local for privacy, or offload heavier jobs to open-source models running in the cloud when your machine runs out of muscle.

That’s exactly where Kimi K3 comes in. This is a 2.8-trillion-parameter mixture-of-experts model with a 1-million-token context window, plus vision support and always-on reasoning. In other words, it can chew through enormous codebases, sprawling research dumps, or hefty document sets without losing the thread — the kind of task where smaller local models start to buckle.

Privacy-minded users will appreciate how the cloud side is handled. Kimi K3 in Bionic runs on US-based servers with Zero Data Retention enabled by default. Requests are processed in the United States, and prompts, files, and outputs aren’t stored once the job is done.

The trade-off, as always with frontier-class models, is cost. Through Bionic, Kimi K3 is priced at:

  • $3 per million input tokens
  • $0.30 per million cached input tokens
  • $15 per million output tokens

That’s a notable jump from the models already on offer. Previously, cloud users could tap DeepSeek V4, Pro, GLM-5.2, Kimi K2.6, and Kimi-K2.7-Code, with input pricing ranging from $0.95 to $1.74 per million tokens and output from $3.48 to $4.50 per million tokens. Kimi K3 sits well above all of them — but that’s the price of admission for the top tier.

The upshot is a clearer split in how you’d actually use Bionic. For everyday agentic tasks, cheaper models or a local setup still make sense. When you’re wrestling with something genuinely gnarly — a million-token research corpus, a complex refactor, or reasoning that needs real headroom — Kimi K3 is now the heavyweight option a click away.

Bionic is free to use with local models and available for both Mac and Windows. The addition of Kimi K3 rounds out the lineup nicely, giving power users a frontier-grade brain on tap without giving up control over their data or their spend.
