Your Name in 4K. Shinkai's body-swap classic returns to the big screen
SHARE

A decade on, Your Name still refuses to be a nostalgia footnote. Makoto Shinkai’s 2016 phenomenon — the tale of two teenagers who wake up in each other’s bodies, connected across time and distance by a comet-lit thread of fate — is heading back to North American theaters in a fresh 4K remaster, with screenings starting August 14, 2026.

Directed and written by Shinkai and animated by CoMix Wave Films, the film runs 1 hour 47 minutes and carries a PG rating. The re-release will be presented in both the original Japanese with subtitles and the English dub, so purists and casual viewers alike are covered.

What the 4K pass mostly buys you is resolution and cleanliness rather than a reinvented film. Shinkai’s visual signature — hyper-detailed Tokyo cityscapes, that near-obsessive rendering of light, cloud and lens flare — was always the sort of material that rewards a sharper canvas. Upscaled to 4K, the golden-hour skies and the twilight kataware-doki sequences should have noticeably more depth and cleaner gradients than the original theatrical DCP allowed.

If you’d rather own it than sit in a cinema, a home-video edition is on the way too. The 4K Ultra HD Steelbook, bundled with a Blu-ray, is priced at US$49.98 and is currently up for pre-order ahead of its August 25, 2026 release. The Steelbook packaging is the obvious collector bait here, but the real draw is having the remaster available in the highest-quality format for a film that lives and dies on image fidelity.

The timing is neat. Your Name was the film that vaulted Shinkai from respected indie voice to global box-office force, and its return to theaters lets a new audience — plus anyone who first saw it on a laptop screen years ago — experience it the way it was meant to be seen: big, loud and drenched in color.

  • Runtime: 1 hour 47 minutes
  • Rating: PG
  • Presentation: 4K remaster, Japanese audio and English dub
  • Theatrical screenings: from August 14, 2026
  • 4K Ultra HD Steelbook + Blu-ray: US$49.98, releasing August 25, 2026

For a film about connection stretched across space and time, a 4K revival ten years later feels almost thematically appropriate. Whether you’re revisiting or discovering it for the first time, this is the definitive way to watch one of the modern anime canon’s genuine crowd-pleasers.
