CXMT LPDDR6. China's memory upstart closes in on the big two
SHARE

The smartphone memory duopoly of Samsung and SK Hynix may soon have a third name to worry about. ChangXin Memory Technologies, better known as CXMT, has nearly wrapped up R&D verification for its first LPDDR6 smartphone memory — one of the final technical hurdles before a chip moves into trial production.

According to China Business News, CXMT could shift to mass production in the second half of 2026. That timeline matters: LPDDR6 is the next big leap in mobile RAM, and until now the leading-edge work has been the near-exclusive territory of the two Korean giants and Micron. A Chinese entrant reaching this stage is a genuine shift in the balance.

Here’s what CXMT’s LPDDR6 brings to the table:

  • 16Gb die density, giving designers the building blocks for high-capacity mobile packages
  • 1295-ball Package-on-Package (PoP) layout, the stacked configuration phone makers use to sit memory directly atop the SoC
  • Baseline speed of 10,667 Mbps (10.7 Gbps), already comfortably ahead of the fastest LPDDR5X in mainstream flagships
  • Peak design speed of 12,800 Mbps (12.8 Gbps), the headline figure the company is chasing at the top end

Those numbers are the whole point of LPDDR6. On-device AI workloads — voice assistants, image generation, real-time translation — are memory-bandwidth hungry, and the jump from LPDDR5X to LPDDR6 is aimed squarely at feeding those models without draining the battery. Faster transfer rates paired with dense 16Gb dies mean flagship phones can juggle larger models and heavier multitasking loads.

The commercial backdrop is just as striking as the silicon. CXMT went public on the Shanghai Stock Exchange on July 27, 2026, and its share price rocketed roughly 470% on the first day of trading. That kind of debut tells you exactly how much appetite there is for a domestic Chinese memory champion — and how much pressure the company is now under to convert R&D milestones into shipping product.

There’s still distance to cover. Completing verification is not the same as running high-yield mass production, and the gap between a working sample and millions of reliable dies is where memory ambitions often stall. Samsung and SK Hynix have decades of process maturity and packaging know-how, and matching a 12.8 Gbps spec on paper is easier than matching it at scale.

Still, if CXMT hits its H2 2026 production window, it would mark the first time a Chinese firm has reached the leading edge of mobile DRAM roughly in step with the incumbents. For phone makers, a credible third supplier could eventually mean more competitive pricing and less exposure to the supply shocks that have repeatedly rattled the memory market. That’s a prospect worth watching closely.
