Light Lens Lab 35mm f/2 Apochromatic. Boutique optics chase Leica-grade sharpness
SHARE

Light Lens Lab has built its reputation on faithful recreations of vintage glass, but the company is now aiming squarely at the cutting edge. The Light Lens Lab 35mm f/2 APO-ASPH “Apochromatic” is the firm’s first entirely new design, born out of its High-Performance Optical Research Project and the debut entry in what will become a full High Performance Series.

The name isn’t just marketing garnish. An apochromatic lens is engineered to bring three wavelengths of light to a common focus, taming the chromatic fringing that plagues fast wide-angles. Pair that with the aspherical surfaces baked into the formula and you have a recipe for the kind of edge-to-edge sharpness and clean color rendering that premium 35mm optics live or die by.

Under the hood, the lens uses an 11-element optical design with four aspherical surfaces — an ambitious count for a compact rangefinder prime. The minimum focus distance is 0.3 meter, which is notably tight for an M-mount lens and welcome news for anyone who finds the traditional 0.7m rangefinder limit frustrating.

Built for Leica M-mount, this is unapologetically a photographer’s lens rather than a mass-market product. The first production batch takes that exclusivity a step further with titanium construction, a premium touch that keeps weight in check while signaling exactly where this optic sits in the market.

  • Focal length / aperture: 35mm f/2 APO-ASPH
  • Mount: Leica M
  • Optics: 11 elements, four aspherical surfaces
  • Minimum focus distance: 0.3 meter
  • First batch: titanium construction

All of this precision engineering carries a fittingly boutique price. The 35mm f/2 Apochromatic is set at US$2,000 to US$2,300, placing it firmly in enthusiast-and-above territory — though still a fraction of what Leica’s own APO glass commands.

Timing-wise, the lens is on the verge of shipping. Pre-orders open in August 2026, with deliveries beginning in September 2026 and running through November. That staggered rollout is typical for small-batch optics, where each titanium barrel represents real assembly time rather than an anonymous factory line.

For Light Lens Lab, the significance runs deeper than a single product. Moving from lovingly reissued classics to a ground-up high-performance design marks a genuine shift in ambition. If the 35mm f/2 delivers on its apochromatic promise, it establishes a template for a whole series of modern optics that could put the boutique maker on the same shelf as the big names it once merely emulated.
