So Avnet and Weston Robot took the opposite tack, and on August 5, 2026 the two companies unveiled an autonomous inspection platform that does its heavy lifting locally, right on the robot.
The stars of the show are quadruped robots — four-legged machines built to scramble across the kind of uneven, cluttered terrain that stops wheeled rigs cold. Rather than beaming raw sensor data back to a distant server and waiting for answers, these units run inference on board, so decisions happen in near real time even when the network is patchy or absent.
That local intelligence comes courtesy of AMD Ryzen AI Embedded processors. The silicon delivers up to 50 TOPS of AI performance, enough headroom for low-latency analysis without a cloud crutch. The practical upshot: reliable operation in exactly the connectivity-starved environments where remote inspection is most useful and most difficult.
The platform is no one-trick pony. It bundles several inspection modes into a single roaming unit:
- AI-driven inspection for automated fault and anomaly detection
- Thermal and visual analytics to catch overheating equipment and visible defects
- 3D LiDAR mapping for spatial awareness and route planning
- Operation in GPS-denied environments, so basements, tunnels and steel-heavy interiors are fair game
Put together, that feature set reads like a checklist for the jobs that are dull, dirty or dangerous for human crews — patrolling substations, sweeping through processing plants, or logging equipment health in spaces where a person would rather not linger.
Just as interesting as the hardware is how you get it. Instead of asking operators to buy a fleet outright, the partners are offering the system on a robots-as-a-service (RaaS) basis. That lowers the barrier to entry for facilities that want autonomous inspection without the capital outlay and maintenance burden of owning the robots, and it fits neatly with the subscription-style thinking that has crept into industrial automation over the past few years.
The collaboration also plays to each company’s strengths. Avnet brings the deep supply-chain and technology-distribution muscle that turns a promising prototype into something a factory can actually deploy at scale, while Weston Robot supplies the robotics know-how and the quadruped platforms themselves. Pairing edge-capable AMD silicon with autonomous legged robots is a bet that the smartest place for industrial AI is not in a data center hundreds of miles away, but standing on four feet in the middle of the plant floor.
