If you spend your evenings pushing sliders and refining selections, Adobe’s early-August rollout across the entire Lightroom family is worth your attention. The updates landed on August 3-4, 2026, spanning Lightroom Classic v15.5, Lightroom Desktop 9.5 and Lightroom Mobile 11.5, and they’re available right now if you’re on a Creative Cloud subscription.
The headline act is masking. Adobe added new Feather and Edge controls, giving you far finer command over how a mask blends into the surrounding image. Anyone who has wrestled with a hard edge creeping across a subject’s hairline knows exactly why this matters. Instead of fighting the selection, you can now dial in the transition and let it fall away naturally, which is the difference between an edit that reads as invisible and one that screams “I dragged a brush here.”
Generative Expand, meanwhile, has spread its wings. Previously a more limited feature, it’s now available in Lightroom 9.5 and Lightroom Mobile, so you can stretch a frame beyond its original borders and let Adobe’s generative engine fill in the gaps — handy when a client suddenly needs a landscape crop from a portrait shot, or when your composition would just breathe better with a little more sky.
There’s also a genuinely useful housekeeping addition: a new Render to DNG option. This lets you save rendered DNG files with all your current edits permanently baked in. It’s a subtle change, but for photographers who share files across tools or want a locked-in version of an edit, it removes a chunk of friction from the workflow.
Cropping gets some love too. You can now temporarily adjust photo opacity while cropping, which sounds minor until you’re trying to align a horizon or line up a subject against a reference. Being able to dim the image on the fly makes precise framing far less of a guessing game.
Taken together, these are the kind of updates that don’t grab a keynote spotlight but quietly make the day-to-day faster. Adobe has clearly been listening to the retouching crowd here — the Feather and Edge controls in particular address a long-standing gripe about masks that never quite behaved.
