Samsung ISOCELL HPC. The 200MP sensor that thinks in 16 bits
SHARE

Samsung has pulled the wraps off its new flagship mobile image sensor, the ISOCELL HPC, and its headline trick is a first for the industry: DeepPix, a pixel architecture that unlocks true 16-bit RAW output. If you care about dynamic range and how a phone camera copes when the lights go down, this is the part worth paying attention to.

On paper, the HPC reads like a modern high-end sensor: a 200MP resolution, a large 1/1.3-inch optical format and tiny 0.6μm pixels. Those numbers alone aren’t new territory — but the way the HPC handles the light hitting each of those pixels is where things get interesting.

DeepPix is designed to let every pixel hold more light before it blows out into overexposure. Samsung backs that claim with a concrete figure: Full Well Capacity increased by 60 percent versus the previous generation, achieved through Front Deep Trench Isolation technology. In plainer terms, each pixel is a deeper bucket that fills up more slowly, which translates into cleaner highlights, more headroom in bright scenes and better behaviour in dim conditions.

The 16-bit part is the payoff. Where most mobile sensors output RAW files at lower bit depths, the HPC’s single-frame 16-bit HDR gives image pipelines dramatically more tonal information to work with in a single exposure — no multi-frame stacking required to build the dynamic range. That’s a meaningful shift for computational photography, which usually leans hard on merging several frames to fake what a bigger sensor does natively.

Video is well catered for too. The HPC can record:

  • 8K at 30fps
  • 4K at 180fps
  • FHD at 360fps

Those high-frame-rate modes leave plenty of room for buttery slow-motion, while 8K keeps it competitive with the top tier of phone sensors.

Rounding out the feature list is a familiar-but-capable stack of Samsung imaging tech: a Tetra²pixel colour filter for pixel binning, Super QPD autofocus for fast, full-area focusing, Smart-ISO Pro HDR, and a combination of microlens and ARL (anti-reflective layer) technology to squeeze more light through the stack and cut down on internal glare.

The HPC has already entered mass production, so the pieces are in place for it to land in a shipping phone. For now, though, there are no consumer products carrying the sensor that you can actually buy, and Samsung hasn’t attached a price to it. Still, a 60 percent jump in light-holding capacity paired with native 16-bit RAW is exactly the kind of foundational upgrade that tends to show up in next-generation flagships — and the DeepPix milestone gives Samsung a genuine claim to being first.
