D'Addario Admits AI. When a Guitar Brand Lets an Algorithm Shred
SHARE

There’s a certain irony in a company that has spent generations making strings for real, human-played guitars getting caught outsourcing a demo track to a machine. That’s exactly the corner D’Addario painted itself into, and after weeks of deflection, the string maker has finally admitted that generative AI was baked into one of its recent promotional videos.

The tool in question is Suno — and more specifically, Suno Studio, which was used to regenerate the original track promoting the company’s NYXL HD electric guitar strings. That admission landed on August 10th, 2026, closing a saga that had been simmering for the better part of two weeks.

Here’s how it played out. Back on July 29th, D’Addario posted to Instagram denying that any generative AI had been involved. As listeners and musicians picked apart the audio and evidence mounted, the company kept reaching for alternative explanations. First it was low-quality exports muddying the sound. Then it was a stack of plugins — Autotune among them — supposedly introducing digital noise. Then came the suggestion that AI-assisted mastering tools from LANDR and Logic were the real culprits, not generative AI composing the music itself.

None of it held. Eventually D’Addario went back and edited its original Instagram denial, appending a lengthy update that conceded the earlier statement was simply wrong. The mea culpa, understated as it was, marked the end of the guessing game.

Why does this sting more than the average AI-slop controversy? Because of who’s involved. This isn’t a faceless content farm churning out background muzak — it’s a legacy instrument company whose entire pitch rests on tone, craftsmanship, and the feel of a real player bending a real string. Using an algorithm to demo a premium product aimed at guitarists is a bit like a bakery advertising sourdough with a photo of a supermarket loaf.

A few takeaways worth chewing on:

  • The cover-up outlasted the crime. Nearly two weeks of shifting explanations did more reputational damage than the original clip ever would have.
  • The technical excuses were plausible-adjacent. Mastering tools like LANDR and Logic genuinely do use AI, which is precisely why they made for convenient scapegoats — until the details didn’t add up.
  • Audiences are getting sharper. The community spotted the tells and refused to let the story rest, which is increasingly the pattern with AI-generated media.

The NYXL HD strings themselves — pitched as premium single strings for extended-range electric instruments and developed at D’Addario’s R&D lab in Farmingdale, New York — remain unaffected by any of this. The product isn’t the problem. The marketing was. And the lesson, for any brand tempted to let a model do the playing, is blunt: if your whole identity is authenticity, maybe don’t let the AI shred.
