Remember hauling your favorite spinning top into school, snapping it into a plastic bowl at lunch and yelling “let it rip”? Slayblade bottles that exact playground adrenaline and pours it into a compact arcade roguelite. During Steam Next Fest earlier this year, its demo quietly became one of the standouts, sitting alongside oddities like the PSX-style horror fishing game About Fishing and the minimalist open-world driver Over The Hill.

The premise is delightfully simple. You build your own spinning disc of destruction, then take it to a small town where seemingly every resident is itching to throw down, Pokémon trainer-style. Each encounter drops you into a bowl-shaped arena where you fling your creation in and steer it with the mouse, dragging it around the rim while desperately trying to keep your momentum alive. Lose your spin and you lose the fight.

Combat is a mix of aggression and opportunism. You go on the offensive to grind down an opponent’s stamina, grab power-ups scattered across the arena, and try to out-spin your rival before your own top wobbles to a halt. It’s a loop that feels instantly readable but leaves plenty of room to get greedy at exactly the wrong moment.

Win a bout and you’re rewarded with cash. That money feeds the roguelite backbone of the game:

  • New parts to bolt onto your top, changing how it behaves in the bowl
  • Upgrades that let you tune your build toward offense, control or endurance

The result is a constant tinkering cycle: battle, bank your winnings, retool your spinner, then go find the next eager challenger. It’s the kind of quick-hit progression that suits short sessions but has a nasty habit of turning “one more fight” into an hour.

There’s a genuine charm to the whole package, too. The town setting and its endlessly combative citizens give the game a quirky personality that leans hard into the nostalgia without feeling like a cheap cash-in. For anyone who grew up in the plastic-bowl battling era, it’s almost aggressively targeted — in the best way.

The Next Fest demo was famously brief, but the full game isn’t far behind it. Slayblade launches on Steam on Thursday, Aug. 20, priced at just US$6. At that number, it’s hard to think of a reason not to give it a spin — a low-stakes impulse buy that promises a surprisingly deep little loop of building, battling and upgrading.

If the demo’s momentum is anything to go by, this could be one of those cheap-and-cheerful Steam surprises that punches well above its weight. Sharpen your top, pick your parts, and get ready to let ’em rip.
