Suno Studio 2.0. AI music maker grows into a proper DAW with MIDI
SHARE

Suno has been chipping away at the gap between “fun AI toy” and “tool you could actually finish a track in,” and Studio 2.0 is its most convincing step yet. The update pushes Suno Studio further away from a bare-bones audio editor with generative features and closer to a genuine digital audio workstation.

The headline change is MIDI support — and it matters more than it might sound. Suno says MIDI was its single most requested feature, which tracks: it’s effectively table stakes for any modern DAW. Being able to work with notes rather than just baked-in audio clips means you can nudge melodies, tweak timing and rebuild parts note by note, instead of endlessly re-rolling a generation and praying for a better take.

That’s a big deal for anyone who wants Suno to sit alongside their existing workflow rather than replace it. Studio already leans on timeline editing, detailed layering and instant generation of vocals, drums and synths that blend into whatever you’ve already got. Add MIDI export into that mix and you have something that can plausibly feed a track back into the wider production pipeline.

There’s a catch, though, and it’s a familiar one. Suno Studio doesn’t appear to support third-party plugins or VSTs yet, so for now you’re locked into its proprietary built-in synth. That instrument looks fairly modest under the hood — a two-oscillator wavetable synth with a small set of envelopes. It’s functional, but it’s not going to satisfy anyone reaching for their favorite vintage emulation.

In practice, that limitation says a lot about where Suno is right now. The point isn’t to slot your beloved Arturia or other boutique instruments into the session. It’s to keep everything inside Suno’s own walled garden, where the generative engine and the synth speak the same language. Convenient for beginners, frustrating for power users who’ve built their sound around outboard plugins.

The timing lines up with Suno’s broader push. On August 10, 2026, the company teased a new generation of models developed in partnership with the music industry, which it claims beat everything it has released before across the board. Studio 2.0 is the interface where those improvements are meant to actually land.

Access, as before, runs through Suno’s subscription tiers:

  • Pro — US$10/mo (US$8/mo billed annually, with 20% off)
  • Premier — US$30/mo (US$24/mo billed annually), which includes Suno Studio

Whether Studio 2.0 truly earns the “AI-native DAW” label depends heavily on how fast plugin support arrives. MIDI closes one of the biggest gaps; the missing VST layer is the next obvious frontier. For now, Suno has built something that finally looks like a music production tool — even if it still insists you make music its way.
