Blue Eye Samurai. Mizu's bloody voyage returns for a two-season sendoff

Nearly three years is a long time to hold a grudge, but that’s exactly how long fans of Blue Eye Samurai have been waiting since the show’s stylish debut in November 2023. At Anime NYC on August 20, Netflix finally handed them a payoff: season two arrives in January 2027, and it turns out the story is racing toward a finish line.

The announcement came bundled with a 90-second teaser. Some of it revisits the season 1 finale, where arms dealer Abijah Fowler (Kenneth Branagh) talks his way out of death by promising to help Mizu (Maya Erskine) reach London and track down the two surviving white men who could be her father. That deal, predictably, comes at a cost. The new footage puts Mizu and Fowler on a sea voyage that goes sideways fast — a storm batters the ship, sailors are swept overboard, and Mizu, gripping the wheel, screams her defiance and recommits to her revenge.

The teaser then cuts to a colder image: Mizu waking on deck with a blade leveled at her, presumably by Fowler, who has clearly slipped his cell. Footage shown earlier at the Annecy Festival in June painted the pair as unsettlingly friendly by the time they reach Europe, which suggests season two will spend real time on that uneasy alliance.

Back in Japan, the supporting cast isn’t being left behind. Earlier previews confirmed that Mizu’s apprentice Ringo (Masi Oka) is searching for a new sense of purpose, while Princess Akemi (Brenda Song) is caught up in royal politics following the Shogun’s death. How those threads reconnect with Mizu’s overseas hunt is one of the season’s biggest open questions.

The bigger reveal, though, is what comes next. Netflix confirmed that a third and final season is already in production. That’s a meaningful detail for a show that made its audience wait so long between the first two chapters — with the finale already underway, the gap before the conclusion should be far shorter this time. It also reframes what season two is: not an open-ended continuation, but the middle act of a deliberately structured, three-part story.

For a series that earned a reputation as one of Netflix’s sharpest-looking animated efforts — all fluid swordplay and painterly Edo-period backdrops — the promise of a defined ending is a rare kindness in the streaming era. Mizu’s quest to find and kill her father now has both a return date and a horizon. January 2027 is when the blade comes back out.
