Higgsfield. When creator sponsorships turn into a credibility crisis
SHARE

There’s a fine line between showcasing a shiny new tool and shilling for it — and this week, a cluster of high-profile filmmaking creators appear to have stumbled across it. Over the past few days, well-known names including Matti Haapoja and Sam “Kold” Kolder published videos demonstrating what the AI platform Higgsfield can do, spotlighting its recently added Seedance 2.5 capabilities and framing the whole thing as the inevitable future of video production.

The reaction was swift, and not the kind Higgsfield’s marketing team was hoping for. Rather than nodding along, other creators started posting what look like screenshots of partnership offers they’d received from PR firms working on Higgsfield’s behalf. Suddenly the coordinated wave of enthusiasm looked less like organic discovery and more like a campaign — and audiences noticed.

What makes this particular flare-up interesting isn’t that brands pay creators to talk about their products. That’s the oldest trick in the influencer playbook. The friction here is who is doing the talking and about what. When professional filmmakers — people whose entire brand is built on craft, taste and human authorship — enthusiastically pitch an AI generation tool, viewers hear something more loaded than a typical gadget plug. It reads as an endorsement of the technology replacing the very skills those creators are admired for.

The leaked outreach messages only sharpened that suspicion. Once fans could see the machinery behind the messaging — PR firms allegedly seeding near-identical talking points across multiple channels at roughly the same time — the videos stopped feeling like independent verdicts and started feeling like an ad buy. The line “this is the future of video production” lands very differently when the audience knows a check may have changed hands.

For Higgsfield, it’s a textbook case of a promotional strategy backfiring. The company clearly wanted its Seedance 2.5 functionality validated by respected voices in the filmmaking community. Instead, the rollout has become a conversation about disclosure, authenticity, and whether creators owe their audiences a clear line between a genuine recommendation and a paid placement — especially when the product in question touches on such a raw nerve as generative AI in creative work.

It’s also a reminder of how fragile creator trust has become. The relationship between a filmmaker and their subscribers is built on the belief that opinions are honestly held. When several creators appear to pivot toward the same AI platform at once, that belief takes a hit — and the backlash, in this case, was aimed as much at the creators as at the tool itself.

Whether Higgsfield’s platform lives up to the “future of video” billing is almost beside the point right now. The story that’s actually spreading is about the messengers, the money, and what happens when the two get too cozy without saying so out loud.
