US AI Data Centers. Texas Quietly Becomes the World's Hyperscale Capital
SHARE

The map of global artificial intelligence infrastructure has tilted decisively toward the United States. Of the world’s 20 largest AI data centers, 15 now sit on American soil — and one state alone accounts for a staggering 12 of them.

That state is Texas, which has emerged as the unlikely epicenter of the compute arms race. What was once a region synonymous with oil and cattle is now stacking racks of GPUs at a pace no other place on Earth can match. The reasons aren’t mysterious: cheap land, a relatively independent power grid, business-friendly regulation, and — crucially — the ability to bolt on new energy capacity fast. When you’re building facilities that draw power like small cities, none of that is a footnote.

The scale of this concentration tells you something about how AI has reshaped the infrastructure playbook. Training and running large models is brutally power-hungry and hardware-dense, and operators no longer chase the traditional connectivity hubs of the coasts. Instead, they hunt for places where electricity is abundant and construction can move quickly. Texas ticks every box, and the numbers show it.

Here’s what the current landscape looks like at a glance:

  • 15 of the top 20 global AI data centers are located in the US
  • 12 of those are clustered in Texas alone
  • The remaining five of the global 20 sit outside the United States

The dominance is remarkable, but it also raises questions that the industry is only beginning to wrestle with. Packing this much compute into a single state puts enormous strain on regional power supplies and cooling resources. It also creates a geographic single point of failure — extreme weather, grid instability or local policy shifts could ripple through a meaningful slice of the world’s AI capacity.

That’s precisely why operators are already scanning the horizon for the next frontier. Emerging markets are gaining importance as companies look to diversify their footprint and secure the one commodity that matters most: reliable, scalable energy. The calculus for the next generation of hyperscale builds is less about proximity to users and more about proximity to power.

For now, though, the story is one of extraordinary American — and specifically Texan — concentration. The US didn’t just win the early rounds of the AI infrastructure buildout; it’s running away with them. Whether that lead holds as demand keeps climbing, and whether the grid can keep pace, will define the next chapter of the compute boom.
