Pelican built its reputation on virtually indestructible hard cases, so a backpack from the brand comes with a certain expectation. The new PX35 Aegis 35L Creator Pack tries to have it both ways, sitting somewhere between a traditional camera backpack and the crushproof shells the company is best known for.
The clever bit is a removable padded interior. This organizer slides straight into standard Pelican hard cases, including the Pelican Air and the Protector 1510 and 1535. The idea is a two-stage workflow: pack your kit into a rolling hard case for the flight, then lift the whole insert out and drop it into the Aegis backpack once you’re on the ground and heading into the field.
Pelican calls the Aegis the “last mile” solution — lighter than a hard case, easier to carry over rough terrain, but built to the protection standard the brand is known for. It’s a neat answer to a familiar photographer complaint: most camera backpacks make you choose between heavy armor and lightweight mobility, then charge extra for the accessories that make them usable.
There’s plenty of room inside. The 35-liter capacity swallows multiple bodies and lenses, including gripped cameras and telephoto zooms. The interior case uses removable padded dividers and securing straps, and opens from both the rear and the side. Even with the insert installed, the top of the bag has its own access point for extra gear and accessories.
