Miller Tripods. The company that gave cinema its first fluid head bows out

If you’ve ever admired a buttery-smooth panning shot in a film or TV broadcast, you owe a small debt to Miller. The Australian firm that invented the fluid tripod head is closing its doors after nearly 80 years in the business.

In an open letter published through the Guild of Television Camera Professionals, owners Mark and Diane Clementson confirmed that September 25 will be the final day of trading for the Sydney-based company, officially known as Miller Camera Support Equipment.

“This decision marks the conclusion of an extraordinary journey that began in Sydney in the mid-1940s and grew into a globally recognized Australian success story,” the pair wrote. “While we look forward to retirement, we do so with immense pride in what Miller has contributed to the film and television industry worldwide.”

The story starts with Australian engineer Bob Miller, who in 1946 built the world’s first fluid tripod head. It was a genuinely transformative piece of engineering. Before it, operators wrestled with bulky gear-driven assemblies that made panning awkward and diagonal moves all but impossible. Miller’s design let cameras glide, cutting production time and unlocking shots that simply couldn’t be achieved before.

Miller secured a U.S. patent in 1949 and formally founded the company in 1954. Its headquarters and manufacturing have stayed near Sydney ever since, backed by service facilities in London and New York. The pedigree endured: PetaPixel names Miller as the best pick for video tripod heads in its buying guide.

“As we bring this chapter to a close, we are incredibly grateful for the support, loyalty, and friendships we have built over the past seven decades,” the Clementsons added. “Serving our customers and working alongside our distributors, suppliers, partners, and employees has been both a privilege and a pleasure.”

They also paid tribute to the founder’s legacy: “Your trust, support, and belief in our products have enabled us to build a business and a legacy that far exceeded anything Bob Miller could have imagined when he first developed the fluid action head nearly 80 years ago.”

The closure isn’t for lack of trying to keep the lights on. According to News Shooter, the Clementsons had been searching for a buyer to take over Miller, but the effort came up empty.

It’s a quietly significant moment for the industry. Fluid heads are now standard kit on virtually every serious video rig, and the concept can be traced straight back to a workshop in postwar Sydney. Miller may be winding down, but the smooth pan it pioneered will keep rolling long after the last unit ships.
