Manipulation has long been robotics’ stubborn wall. Making a wheeled robot roll around a warehouse is comparatively easy; teaching a machine to reliably grasp a floppy poly bag, a slick shrink-wrapped box, and a lumpy retail item with the same hardware is a genuinely hard problem. Locus Robotics is now attacking that wall head-on, and it just added a serious tool to its arsenal.
Locus acquired Nexera Robotics, a company built around unusual soft-picking technology, folding that expertise into its own manipulation stack. The result shows up most clearly in Locus Array — a fully autonomous warehouse robot that runs end-to-end fulfillment workflows directly inside the aisle rather than shuttling items back to a fixed picking station.
Array is positioned as an advanced Physical AI system, which is a fancy way of saying it fuses several capabilities that usually live in separate boxes: AI-powered vision, real-time decision-making, and robotic manipulation, all working together on the move.
The clever bit is the gripper. Locus calls it NeuraGrasp, and it pairs AI-driven grasping intelligence with onboard sensory inputs and computer vision. The physical trick is a patented soft membrane structure that lets a single gripper conform to wildly different objects — variations in shape, surface texture, material, porosity, and weight. In practice that means one hardware design can handle a broad slice of a warehouse’s inventory instead of demanding a bespoke end-effector for every SKU category, which is exactly the flexibility that has held automated picking back for years.
On the logistics side, Array is built for density. Each robot supports six totes, works with storage up to 10 feet, accommodates multiple tote heights, and handles double-deep configurations. That combination lets it operate in tighter, taller aisle layouts where fixed automation would struggle.
The rollout has followed a deliberate path. Array was first unveiled in March 2025, then formally launched at MODEX 2026. It is currently live in customer deployments, with additional sites underway — so this is production hardware in real facilities, not a demo-floor concept.
