Huawei has unveiled the FreeBuds Neo, a new generation of wireless earbuds positioned as a more accessible sibling to its flagship FreeBuds Pro range. The pitch is bold for the price bracket: audio that “feels like a live performance”, “flagship level” noise cancellation and “crystal clear calls”.
The buds themselves stick to a lightweight mini-stem design, with each earbud weighing approximately 4.8g (with the medium ear tips fitted). Huawei says it has reworked the ear tips across “eight key ear-related surfaces” to make them comfortable over long sessions and to fit a wider range of ears. The earbuds carry an IP55 rating, touch controls cover 60 per cent of the stem’s front surface, and they ship in a curved “mini shuttle” charging case designed to slip into any pocket.
Sound comes from an 11mm polymer composite dynamic driver at the heart of what Huawei calls a “turbo drive unit”. A multi-port vent system balances the pressure behind the diaphragm for “smoother, more controlled diaphragm movement”, while the lightweight, high-rigidity diaphragm is claimed to deliver “clear highs and a realistic sense of presence”. Huawei quotes a frequency range of 10Hz to 48kHz.
Codec support goes beyond the basics: alongside standard Bluetooth codecs there is LDAC at up to 990kbps, plus Huawei’s own L2HC codec, which allows higher 2.3Mbps high-resolution lossless transmission — though only with select Huawei smartphones and tablets. There is also an “unlimited spatial audio” mode that uses real-time head tracking to keep the soundstage stable as you move, a fixed spatial audio option, and “pinpoint game audio” tuned for first-person shooters, promising accurate tracking of footsteps and gunshots.
Noise cancelling relies on a “dual-channel noise cancellation architecture”, pairing a C-shaped tube with an air vent to keep outside mid and high frequencies out of the ear. A third-generation audio chip processes and cancels environmental sound, resulting in an average noise cancellation of -30dB across the hearable frequency range.
The Huawei Audio Connect app handles noise cancellation modes, EQ settings, locating the earbuds and checking battery levels, and the FreeBuds Neo work across Android, iOS and Windows with cross-system dual-device connection. Battery life is a strong suit:
- Up to 40 hours with the charging case
- Up to 10 hours from the earbuds alone, or 6.5 hours with ANC enabled
- A 10-minute quick charge delivers four hours of playback
The FreeBuds Neo come in four colours — Stellar Silver, Nebula Pink, Ice White and Starry Black — and go on sale in the UK on 23rd September for £120. Buyers who order before the 26th of October get a £20 discount.
