Optimus Prime Awakening. Peter Cullen's final ride into the theater

Forty years after The Transformers: The Movie first melted young minds with Unicron and the death of Optimus Prime, the film is rolling back into cinemas — and this time it comes with something new bolted onto the end.

Optimus Prime: Awakening is a 12-minute animated short created for the 40th anniversary theatrical return of the classic. It plays after the credits of the main feature, which is showing in international theaters from September 17 to September 22, 2026.

The headline isn’t the runtime, though. This short carries Peter Cullen’s final performance as Optimus Prime — the voice that has defined the Autobot leader since 1984. For anyone who grew up with that unmistakable baritone rallying the troops, this is a genuine full-circle moment, and a bittersweet one.

The timing feels deliberate. The original 1986 film famously killed off Optimus in a scene that traumatized a generation of kids and, allegedly, prompted a wave of angry parental letters. Bookending that same movie with a fresh Cullen performance — one billed as his last — turns a nostalgic rerelease into something closer to a proper send-off.

A few things worth setting straight:

  • The short is 12 minutes long and stitched to the back of the feature, so you’ll want to stay past the credits.
  • It runs alongside The Transformers: The Movie, not as a standalone release.
  • The theatrical window is tight — a five-day international run rather than a wide, open-ended booking.

Ticket pricing hasn’t been detailed, so if you’re planning a trip, check with your local cinema for showtimes and costs. Given the compressed schedule, this isn’t the kind of thing you can casually catch next month.

There’s a neat symmetry to all of this. The 1986 movie was a rite of passage — the first time many fans saw their heroes in widescreen, backed by a hair-metal soundtrack and a body count that would make a Michael Bay sequel blush. Four decades on, seeing it on the big screen again is reason enough to go. Getting one more moment with Cullen’s Optimus, freshly recorded, is the part that’ll stick.

Whether Awakening plays as a quiet coda or a setup for something larger remains to be seen. Either way, if Peter Cullen is stepping back from the role that made him a voice-acting legend, watching him do it in a theater full of Transformers fans is about as fitting an exit as you could script.
