Medtronic and Cornerstone Robotics. A $700 million bet on surgical robots
SHARE

Medtronic has taken a roughly $700 million stake in Cornerstone Robotics, the Hong Kong-based surgical robotics firm behind the Sentire endoscopic surgical system. The strategic partnership, announced on September 1, 2026, hands Medtronic the rights to distribute Sentire in select markets outside the United States where the system already holds regulatory approval — and instantly turns one of the medtech giant’s rivals-in-waiting into an ally.

Sentire is the part of the deal worth watching. Developed entirely in-house at Cornerstone Robotics, the soft-tissue surgical robot received its CE Mark in May 2026 and is also market-approved in China and Singapore. It is cleared for minimally invasive general, gynecologic, thoracic and urologic procedures, and has already completed multi-specialty clinical trials. On the hardware side, the system pairs an immersive surgeon console — with dual-console capability for training and collaboration — with wristed instruments and 3D visualization.

For Medtronic, the logic is portfolio breadth rather than replacement. The company’s own Hugo robotic-assisted surgery system remains the anchor: it operates in more than 35 countries across six continents, picked up FDA clearance in the United States within the past year, and is growing at more than double the rate of the overall robotic surgery market. Medtronic expects Hugo to surpass 50,000 total procedures globally by the end of its current fiscal year. Matt Anderson, senior vice president and president of Medtronic Surgical, framed the tie-up as an answer to the simple reality that surgeons, health systems and markets have varying needs and preferences — one robot, in other words, does not fit every operating room or every budget.

Cornerstone Robotics brings serious industrial muscle to the arrangement. The company, founded and led by CEO Samuel Au, runs three global R&D hubs and six business centers worldwide, plus a 30,000-square-meter manufacturing facility in China. Au said he is confident that physicians and patients will be the greatest beneficiaries of the partnership.

The combined pitch is a multi-port surgical portfolio anchored by Hugo and expanded by Sentire, giving hospitals a choice of platforms under one commercial umbrella. Key facts at a glance:

  • Investment: approximately $700 million, announced September 1, 2026
  • Medtronic gains distribution rights for Sentire in select markets outside the U.S. where it is approved
  • Sentire: CE Mark in May 2026, market approval in China and Singapore; cleared for general, gynecologic, thoracic and urologic surgery
  • Hugo: available in 35+ countries on six continents, with U.S. FDA clearance secured within the past year

In a field long dominated by a single big name in soft-tissue robotics, Medtronic is now betting that two platforms are better than one.
