Orthopedics specialist Enovis is buying its way into the most contested corner of the operating room. On September 1, 2026, the Dallas-based medical technology company announced a binding offer to acquire eCential Robotics, a French developer of robotic-assisted surgery systems, at an upfront enterprise value of €155 million — roughly US$180 million.
The structure has a second layer. Cash consideration to shareholders comes to approximately €176 million at closing, with up to €35 million more in contingent payments tied to milestones. Enovis said it will fund the purchase from cash on its balance sheet plus availability under its existing revolving credit facility, and expects the transaction to close by year-end 2026, subject to regulatory approvals.
What Enovis is actually acquiring
eCential Robotics, headquartered in Grenoble, France, has built a modular platform for robotic-assisted bone surgery on what Enovis characterizes as more than 15 years of innovation in computer-assisted surgery and orthopedic robotics. The company’s own materials pitch an open, all-in-one surgical platform that folds 2D/3D imaging, real-time navigation and robotics into a single system, and cite more than 3,500 surgeries performed and over 100 patents filed.
The hardware detail Enovis keeps circling back to is the arm. “We believe developing a robot with eCential Robotics that carries advantages such as a robotic arm with seven degrees of freedom will differentiate our offering,” said CEO Damien McDonald, who also described enabling tech as “foundational to our long-term growth strategy.” A seventh axis is redundancy by design: it gives the arm more than one way to reach the same pose, which matters when the useful space around a patient is already crowded with hands, retractors and imaging gear.

The roadmap is deliberately staged rather than splashy. Enovis has said the first robot to market will target the knee, arriving in late 2028, with a shoulder system following in 2029. Both would slot into ASTRA, the company’s enabling technology platform, which today spans an augmented reality headset and procedure planning software but has had no robotic automation of its own. Grenoble is set to become a robotics center of excellence within the combined business.
For eCential Robotics, the appeal is reach. “Our strategy…has always been to offer surgeons easy-to-use, cutting-edge technology,” said CEO Clément Vidal. Founder and chair Stéphane Lavallée was blunter: “I could not be more excited about the next chapter for eCential Robotics.”
McDonald framed the purchase as characteristic rather than opportunistic — “a significant milestone…reflects our disciplined approach to bringing externally developed innovation into Enovis.” Translation: Enovis would rather buy a working platform with a decade and a half of engineering behind it than spend those years catching up. Whether a knee robot arriving in late 2028 counts as catching up is the question the rest of the market will answer first.
