Netflix’s movie top 10 is a popularity contest, not a quality filter, and the chart for the weekend of September 5-6, 2026 proves it: a Nordic identity thriller, an animated bird sequel, a 9/11 documentary and a 1980 office comedy are all sitting in the same list. Here are the three titles in it that actually earn the click.
‘The Secret Woman’ (2026) is holding at No. 2 for a second week in a row, and the numbers behind that are not small: the Danish psychological thriller pulled in over 11 million views in just three days. It’s adapted from the 2017 novel of the same name by Anna Ekberg, with Natalie Madueño as Louise, a woman living a quiet life on a Norwegian island with her partner Joachim (Pål Sverre Hagen). Then a stranger turns up and tells her she is really Helene Söderberg, a Danish woman who vanished three years earlier. A DNA test agrees. Louise heads to Denmark to meet a husband (Claes Bang), a young son and a wealthy family she cannot remember — and the more of her old life she reassembles, the less she likes it.
‘Facing El Chapo’ (2026) has slid from the top spot down to No. 8, but it has now spent three weekends on the chart, which is a longer run than most Netflix originals manage. The Spanish-language crime thriller is based on a true story: Noé Hernández and Alfonso Herrera play two cops whose routine traffic stop goes very wrong when they realise the car they have pulled over belongs to cartel boss Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán. Arresting him is the easy part; surviving his network is the rest of the film. If Sicario and Narcos are your register, this is built for you.
‘9 to 5’ (1980) is the outlier at No. 5, and the reason is a sad one. Dolly Parton died on August 25, 2026, at the age of 80, and the film returned to Netflix in the US on August 31, 2026 — its first stint on the service in roughly a decade. Parton, Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda play three office workers who turn the tables on their sexist, egotistical boss (Dabney Coleman), and their revenge fantasies stop being fantasies when they think they have poisoned his coffee. The screwball material still lands, but it’s the cast — plus Sterling Hayden — that keeps it a cult classic 46 years on.
