Apple built its 2026 fall keynote around a two-word tease, Surprise and shine, posted by marketing chief Greg Joswiak on August 26, 2026 alongside an invitation showing a glowing Apple logo with a sun behind it. The keynote was set for 10 a.m. Pacific on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at Apple Park in Cupertino, with press on site and a stream running on apple.com, YouTube and the Apple TV app.
The genuine surprise, though, is who ran the show. John Ternus, the senior vice president of hardware engineering who joined Apple’s product design team in 2001, became chief executive on September 1, 2026. Tim Cook moved to executive chairman after 15 years in the top job, a succession Apple laid out publicly on April 20, 2026. Ternus opened the September 9 keynote himself, framing the iPhone as an AI-driven personal hub rather than a slab of glass with features bolted on. For a hardware engineer stepping into Steve Jobs’ and Cook’s staging spot, it was a pointed choice of opening argument.
Apple named no products in the invitation, which is entirely normal. The expectations came from elsewhere. MacRumors, which tracks this stuff obsessively, went into the keynote expecting:
- iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, the year’s flagship pair
- Apple’s first foldable iPhone, widely reported under the name iPhone Ultra
- Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4
- AirPods 5, with a home hub, a new Apple TV 4K and a HomePod mini as outside bets
Pricing is where caution matters most. MacRumors put the foldable at at least $2,000, with higher-capacity configurations reaching $2,500, and pencilled in increases of $100 to $300 for the iPhone 18 Pro over the previous generation. Not one of those figures came from Apple. Treat them as the informed guesswork they are until Apple’s own store pages settle the question.
The absences are as telling as the arrivals. The standard iPhone 18 was not expected in the fall line-up at all, having slipped to spring 2027, which breaks the rhythm Apple has kept since the iPhone X era and splits the range across two release windows. Also absent from the September expectations: the Apple Watch SE 4, an M6 MacBook Pro or iMac, and OLED versions of the MacBook Pro and iPad mini.
That reshuffle, plus a foldable arriving years after Samsung’s, plus a first-time CEO, makes this the most consequential Apple keynote in a decade. Apple posts a replay of the presentation on its events page, in both standard and ASL versions, so the stage claims are easy enough to check against the spec sheets that follow.
