After years of rumours, Apple finally showed a folding iPhone. The iPhone Duo was unveiled on September 9, 2026: a book-style foldable roughly the size of a passport when closed, with a 5.4-inch outer screen and a 7.6-inch panel inside. It starts at $1,999 with 256GB of storage, which puts it exactly where every other premium foldable lives.
Apple’s pitch is that nobody has done this properly yet. “Others have created foldables that feels like two phones awkwardly stuck together,” said Apple CEO John Ternus, who called the Duo “the most transformational change to iPhone since the original.” The argument rests on two things: the crease, and the software.
For the crease, Apple leans on the nano-texture display finish already used on high-end Mac and iPad screens. The matte surface scatters reflections, and Apple claims that makes the fold line virtually imperceptible. Underneath sits a precision hinge built from more than 100 components. For the software, iOS 27 was reworked around the two-screen layout, with apps rebuilt for the larger footprint and proper multitasking when the phone is open.
The core hardware:
- Displays: 7.6-inch inner and 5.4-inch outer Super Retina XDR, same aspect ratio, ProMotion, Always-On, up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness. Apple says the outer display covers 90 percent of the screen area of iPhone 18 Pro.
- Chip: A20 Pro, the same silicon as iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
- Battery: up to 44 hours of video playback on the outer display, up to 31 hours on the inner one, up to 24 hours mixed. Fast charging hits 50 percent in around 20 minutes wired, or 30 minutes wirelessly.
- Build: grade 5 titanium frame, Ceramic Shield on the back, Ceramic Shield 2 on the front, IP68 dust and water resistance, Touch ID in the side button with support for multiple enrolled fingers. eSIM only, to free up internal volume.
The cameras are strong but stop short of Pro territory. There is a 48MP Fusion Main camera and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide, but the main sensor is not the new variable-aperture unit from iPhone 18 Pro, and there is no dedicated telephoto. Instead you get 2x “optical quality” frames cropped from a 24MP capture. Video tops out at 4Kp120 in Dolby Vision, with Cinematic effects applicable after the fact at up to 60 frames per second.
The folding body does unlock genuinely new camera behaviour. Half-open, the Duo becomes its own tripod, so you can set it down, walk into frame, and let the Camera app fire once everyone is posed. Unfolded, it records from the rear and front cameras at once, with the subject watching their own framing on the outer display. The inner FaceTime camera hides under the display and all but disappears when idle.
Colours are star white and night sky. Apple Pencil support for both screens is promised later in 2026. Preorders open on October 16, with availability starting October 23; storage runs to 2TB at $3,199.
