Richter Dragon S7 Special Edition. The Aussie floorstander breathes fire again

Some speaker names refuse to stay retired. The Dragon is one of them, and Australian maker Richter has brought it back as the Dragon S7 Special Edition, a four-way floorstander that sits in the middle of the reworked Series 7 Special Edition range.

Richter has been designing and engineering audio gear in Australia since 1986, and the Series 7 SE is the company’s attempt to modernise that legacy rather than embalm it. The new range was developed with industrial designer Adam Hobbs and acoustical engineer Dr Martin Gosnell, and it shows in the cabinet work: softer, contemporary geometry wrapped in natural walnut veneer, with a matte anthracite grey baffle and a textured grey cloth grille. Managing director Brian Rodgers framed the brief bluntly, saying the series was built to “win the lounge room argument” with aesthetics that belong in a shared living space.

Under that veneer, the Dragon S7SE is a genuinely busy design. It runs a 25mm soft-dome neo tweeter, a dedicated 70mm soft-dome midrange, two 165mm (6½”) composite paper cone mid-bass drivers and a single 165mm (6½”) high-power composite paper cone bass driver. The enclosure is a dual-chamber vented bass reflex with port tuning, and the crossover is a four-way, bi-wire-ready network using polypropylene capacitors alongside air-cored and ferrite-cored inductors.

The headline numbers:

  • Frequency response: 25Hz–30kHz (-6dB)
  • Sensitivity: 90dB (2.83Vrms, 1m on-axis)
  • Impedance: 4 Ohms, minimum 3.5 Ohms
  • Recommended amplification: 100–300 Wrms from high-current 4-Ohm rated amplifiers
  • Dimensions (with grille and stabilisers): H1091 x W285 x D419 mm
  • Weight: 29.1kg per speaker

That 3.5-Ohm minimum and the 100–300 Wrms recommendation are the two figures worth reading twice. This is not a speaker that will flatter a modest lifestyle amplifier. Richter clearly expects the Dragon to be fed by something with real current delivery, which is consistent with a 29.1kg cabinet carrying three 165mm drivers.

The 70mm mid-dome is the most interesting engineering call. Handing the upper midrange to a dedicated dome, rather than asking a cone mid-bass to stretch into vocal territory, is a classic way to clean up voices and instrumental texture. Across the range Richter also fitted new mid-bass drivers with lightweight, rigid cones on cast-alloy baskets, and bass drivers with larger voice coils and more excursion.

The Dragon S7SE launched alongside the 3½-way Wizard S7SE and the 4.5-way Excalibur S7SE in February 2026, with dealer deliveries starting from mid-February. The compact Aurora S7SE bookshelf model was scheduled to follow in the second quarter of 2026. Distribution was set for Australia and New Zealand at launch, with Richter open to distributors in Southeast Asia and the Northern Hemisphere.

The reception has been warm. Australian Hi-Fi, in Issue 545 (April 2026), called the Dragon S7SE “in every conceivable way, a stellar set of speakers”, and the model took the 2026 Sound & Image Floorstanding Loudspeaker of the Year under $10,000 title.
