Endings have long been the sore spot of the Fable series, and Playground Games knows it. In an interview with The Guardian published on September 15, 2026, game director Ralph Fulton put it bluntly: “Most importantly, we stick the landing.” The reboot, published by Xbox Game Studios, is set to launch on February 23, 2027.
Fulton’s argument runs against a familiar industry calculation. He pointed to metrics that say 100% of people start a game and only 25% finish it, which can tempt studios to spend less on the finale. “But we relentlessly pursued quality here,” he said. According to Fulton, the story “culminates in a choice that really challenges you to think about who you are, with a real personal cost.”
That matters to anyone who remembers Fable 2. The 2008 RPG is widely considered the high point of the series, yet its ending is just as widely remembered as anticlimactic and at odds with the franchise’s love of player freedom. Playground says the new game keeps the main quest low-stakes for most of the adventure, so players feel free to wander and dig into its systems. The only stretch where you are locked into the main story is the ending itself.
A racing studio’s first RPG
Fable is a big bet for a studio best known for Forza Horizon. The original Fable came from Lionhead Studios on the original Xbox in 2004. Microsoft closed Lionhead in 2016, and the multiplayer spin-off Fable Legends never came out. Playground, based in Leamington Spa, has spent roughly a decade bringing the series back. The game’s schedule also slipped: at the Developer_Direct on January 22, 2026, it was still aimed at autumn 2026, and the February 2027 date was announced at the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7, 2026.
Here’s what is known about the game so far:
- Setting: Albion, with more than 1,000 unique NPCs who have their own routines, jobs and homes.
- Reputation system: it replaces the old good-versus-evil scale. Villagers judge what they see you do, and that affects romance, shop prices and how people react to you.
- Life sim: you can fall in love, marry (even several partners), have kids, and buy homes and businesses, up to owning every property in Albion.
- Combat: reworked “style-weaving” that mixes melee, ranged attacks and magic.
- Length: around 15–20 hours for the main story.
- Cast: Hayley Atwell, Richard Ayoade, Matt King (as the retired hero Humphry) and Natasia Demetriou, among others.
Platforms and price
Fable launches on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store, and it will be on Xbox Game Pass on day one. On the Xbox Store, the Standard Edition costs $69.99 and the Premium Edition costs $99.99. The Premium Edition lets you play up to 5 days early and includes a digital artbook and soundtrack, extra armour sets and the post-launch expansion Fable: Order of the Hero. Pre-orders of any edition come with a Chicken Suit.
Fulton wasn’t shy about the stakes, calling it “an important game.” Whether the finale lives up to that promise will be clear once players reach it in February 2027.
