Grand Theft Auto VI. Cocaine on demand, and the case for real consequences

Age-rating paperwork rarely makes headlines, but the PEGI entry for Grand Theft Auto VI did. Europe’s ratings board gave Rockstar Games’ next open-world crime epic a PEGI 18 rating, with descriptors for violence, sex, drugs and in-game purchases. One line in particular went viral: according to PEGI, cocaine can be carried around by the player and consumed directly at any time, and drug use is described as “frequent and prominent”, whether with other characters or straight from the inventory.

It is a very GTA detail. In an opinion piece published on October 6, 2026, Polygon argued that it is also a chance for Rockstar to do something the industry has mostly avoided: make drug use in a game actually matter.

What PEGI says is in the game

  • Rating: PEGI 18, assigned for strong graphic violence, strong sexual themes and the use of illegal drugs
  • Violence: graphic and realistic scenes, including detailed decapitation and dismemberment
  • Drugs: cocaine can be carried and consumed by the player; drugs can be used with other characters or from the inventory
  • Sex: nudity, intercourse and scenes involving sexual fetishes, plus paid private dances at certain nightclubs
  • In-game purchases: optional, and the game can be played without buying them

The usual buff-and-debuff routine

Drugs are nothing new for Rockstar. The protagonists of GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 could already partake, and the August 2026 gameplay reveal of GTA 6 opened with Jason and Lucia caught in a drug deal gone wrong. Elsewhere in the industry, though, narcotics tend to be a short stat boost with a penalty for overuse. Polygon points to Starfield, where overdoing stimulants slows oxygen recovery and cuts carry capacity by 20% until a doctor’s visit cures the addiction, and The Outer Worlds 2, where overusing the tobacco-fuelled inhaler can trigger a permanent “drug addiction” flaw.

Why GTA 6 might go further

Rockstar’s own statements set a high bar. Rockstar North co-studio head and head of development Aaron Garbut told Game Informer: “Normally you compromise scale for detail or detail for interaction, but with this project we went the other way – everything is dialed up, detail, scope, breadth, scale, interaction and density.” He also said the choice-driven gameplay is meant to encourage multiple playthroughs.

Polygon sketches out what that could mean in practice:

  • Body and health. Diet and exercise are already known to change how Jason and Lucia look and feel, so a constant cocaine habit could plausibly show up there too.
  • Relationships. The optional romance between the two leads could suffer if one indulges heavily while the other abstains.
  • NPC reactions. Previews describe far more complex non-player characters, so pulling out a bag in a crowded bar could mean dirty looks, a social media video, being thrown out or a call to the police.
  • Missions. Heavy users might unlock unique jobs, since a habit is not cheap, and be locked out of others: a client hiring bodyguards would hardly want them high on the job.

None of this is confirmed by Rockstar; for now the PEGI line is the only hard fact. Grand Theft Auto VI is due on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, which is when players will find out whether “you can” comes with a “but you probably shouldn’t”.
