Summer party season means one thing for your audio kit: it needs to survive sunshine, spilled drinks and the occasional garden downpour. The Bose SoundLink Max ticks all those boxes, and right now it’s down to £299 at Amazon — a £100 saving on its usual £399 sticker.
This is a speaker built to travel. Wrapped in a rugged silicone casing with a proper carry-handle, it carries an IP67 rating, meaning it shrugs off both dust and water. Park picnic, poolside session or a downpour mid-barbecue — none of it fazes the SoundLink Max.
The headline, though, is the sound. Our testers put it on the list of best outdoor speakers for good reason: the delivery is lively and punchy, with an expressive midrange and a drum kit that lands with genuine force. Cue up Welcome to the Jungle and Axl Rose’s wailing vocal cuts through with real energy — this is a speaker that begs to be turned up.
One small caveat: out of the box the bass runs a touch heavy. Dial it down to minus five or six in the app and you’ll find the sweet spot.
Battery life is where the Max really earns its keep, delivering a claimed 20 hours per charge with a wireless range of 30ft. That’s enough to soundtrack an all-day event without a power cable in sight. Better still, it doubles as a power bank, so it can top up your phone while you’re out.
Connectivity is well sorted too. You get Bluetooth 5.3 with SBC, AAC and aptX Adaptive codec support, plus Google Fast Pair for Android users and Bluetooth multipoint for hooking up two devices at once and switching between them effortlessly.
Physically it’s a manageable size — 10.42 inches wide, 4.73 inches high and 4.13 inches deep, tipping the scales at just under five pounds. Compact enough to sling into a bag, sturdy enough to leave out on the patio.
The Bose faces stiff competition from the JBL Xtreme 5, which sits at a similar price and impresses with its sense of scale and sonic presence. It’s a bulkier proposition, though, so if portability matters the SoundLink Max has the edge.
First launched back in May 2024, the SoundLink Max has aged gracefully and remains one of the more accomplished premium Bluetooth speakers you can buy. With £100 knocked off, it’s an easy recommendation for anyone whose summer soundtrack needs to keep up with the weather.
