Call of Duty Black Ops PS4/PS5 Port. Exploiters Turn Nostalgia Into Chaos

Bringing a beloved classic back to life is a lovely idea — right up until the cheaters show up. Days after the Call of Duty: Black Ops port arrived on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, players are calling the multiplayer experience “unplayable,” with lobbies flooded by exploiters running amok.

The port, developed by Iron Galaxy, launched on July 9, 2026, alongside a similar treatment for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. Both titles arrived as faithful ports rather than full remasters: original visuals intact, no major gameplay overhauls, the stated goal being to preserve the original experience on modern hardware. Each package bundles the full Campaign, Multiplayer, and Zombies modes.

On paper, this is exactly what longtime fans wanted — a chance to revisit two of the franchise’s most fondly remembered chapters without dusting off an old console. In practice, the multiplayer lobbies have become a proving ground for exploiters, and the complaints have piled up fast. When a match devolves into a free-for-all of manipulated stats and broken sessions, the nostalgia trip curdles into frustration in a hurry.

Here’s where it gets nuanced. The exploit concerns echo issues that plagued the original Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of these games years ago — a familiar ghost from Black Ops history rather than a defect baked into the new build. Notably, the fresh PlayStation ports shipped with dedicated servers specifically intended to address that exact problem. That the trouble has resurfaced anyway suggests the fix is proving harder to hold in place than anyone hoped.

For anyone weighing a purchase, the numbers are straightforward:

  • Call of Duty: Black Ops (PS4/PS5 Port) — US$40; PS Plus subscribers pay US$19.99 for the first month.
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 (PS4/PS5 Port) — US$40; PS Plus subscribers pay US$19.99 for the first month.

At US$40 apiece, these aren’t impulse buys, and the multiplayer meltdown makes the value proposition a little murkier. The campaigns and Zombies content still deliver the goods for solo and co-op players — no exploiter can hijack a single-player story mission. But multiplayer is the beating heart of the Black Ops legacy, and it’s the mode taking the beating right now.

The good news is that dedicated servers give the developers a lever to pull, which is more than the original releases ever had. Server-side infrastructure means fixes can, in theory, be deployed without waiting on client patches. Whether Iron Galaxy can clamp down on the exploits quickly enough to win back trust is the open question. Until then, the verdict from the trenches is blunt: a faithful port undermined by an unfaithful lobby.
