ARRI Divests Rental Arm. Camera Giant Hands Studios to New Owner

Barely three months after German entrepreneur Thomas Riedel took the reins of ARRI, the storied camera and lighting maker has made a move few in the industry saw coming: it is selling off its global rental business.

The deal, announced on July 13, 2026, covers ARRI’s rental operations across Europe, the United Kingdom, and North America. The buyer is H2 Equity Partners, an investment firm that will take over the sprawling network of facilities that has, for years, put ARRI gear directly into the hands of film crews and live-event productions.

For anyone who has stepped onto a professional set, this matters. ARRI’s rental arm is the practical bridge between the company’s engineering and the productions that actually shoot on its equipment. Cameras, lens sets, lighting rigs — the sort of premium kit that most productions lease rather than buy outright — have long flowed through ARRI’s own rental houses in key markets.

The manufacturer itself is not going anywhere. ARRI remains a global premium maker of camera and lighting technology for motion picture and live entertainment. What changes is the ownership of the service layer around that hardware. By offloading the rental side, ARRI appears to be sharpening its focus on what it does best: designing and building the tools, rather than operating the logistics-heavy business of shipping them in and out of studios.

The timing is what raises eyebrows. Corporate ownership changed hands in April, when Riedel acquired the company. A divestiture of this scale, so soon after, reads less like routine housekeeping and more like a deliberate reshaping of the business under new leadership. Selling a rental network spanning three major regions is not a decision made lightly, and it signals a strategic reset rather than a minor tidying of the books.

What it means for the wider industry is still taking shape. Rental customers will be watching closely to see how H2 Equity Partners runs the operation — whether service continuity, gear availability, and the relationships built up over years survive the handover intact. For a business where a delayed camera package can derail a shooting schedule, stability is everything.

The move also underscores a broader trend in professional imaging: manufacturers increasingly want to be manufacturers, leaving the capital-intensive, margin-thin work of equipment rental to specialists. Whether that separation ultimately serves productions better or simply adds another layer between the brand and its users is the question that will define the next chapter.

For now, the headline is clear. ARRI is stepping back from renting out its own hardware, and a new owner is stepping in to run the shops that keep so many sets running.
