Acoustic Energy AE Active. British active speakers go all-analogue

Active speakers usually mean one thing: DSP crossovers, digital inputs and a firmware update lurking somewhere in the signal path. Acoustic Energy has taken the opposite route. The AE Active is a resolutely analogue design, and the British firm is betting that purity beats processing.

Each cabinet carries its own amplification — a pair of 50-watt Class A/B amplifiers per speaker, giving 200W total across the stereo pair. Crucially, those amps are fed by high-quality linear power supplies rather than switch-mode units, keeping noise low and continuing the no-shortcuts theme.

The driver line-up is classic Acoustic Energy. A 5″ ceramic hard-anodised aluminium pure-piston driver handles mid-bass, paired with a 1″ aluminium dome tweeter that gets a new rear chamber to tame reflections behind the diaphragm. The two hand over at a 3.1kHz second-order crossover, and the whole thing stretches from 42Hz to 28kHz — plenty of reach at both ends for a compact standmount.

Because the amplification is built in, connectivity is refreshingly simple. You get:

  • Balanced XLR inputs for cleaner runs and pro-grade sources
  • Unbalanced RCA inputs for everything else

That’s the lot — no HDMI, no Bluetooth, no app. Feed the AE Active a decent preamp or a source with volume control and you’re done. It’s the kind of setup that appeals to listeners who want the convenience of active speakers without inviting a digital layer into the chain.

Finish options cover the usual tastes: high-gloss black, high-gloss white and a natural walnut wood veneer for anyone who prefers their hi-fi to look like furniture rather than studio kit.

The pitch here is integration. By designing driver, amplifier and power supply as a single system, Acoustic Energy can match each stage to the others instead of leaving the amp choice to chance. Passive speakers are always at the mercy of whatever box you bolt on the front; active designs like this remove that variable entirely, and the all-analogue approach means the sound stays true to the engineers’ intentions.

The AE Active is priced at £1,250 per pair, with US$ and Euro pricing still to be confirmed. It’s rolling out through Acoustic Energy’s dealer network this month, so demos should start appearing at specialist retailers shortly.

At this price, the AE Active lands squarely against a crowd of accomplished passive standmounts — and a growing field of active rivals that lean heavily on DSP. Acoustic Energy’s answer is to keep things analogue, tightly integrated and, by its own account, superb-sounding. Whether that philosophy wins hearts will come down to a listen, but the spec sheet reads like a speaker built by people who trust their ears over their software.
