Xiaomi Mix Fold 5. The foldable that skips the Snapdragon wait
SHARE

Xiaomi’s next big foldable is closing in, and the smart money says it lands well ahead of the flagship crowd. The Xiaomi Mix Fold 5 has already picked up certification in China, seemingly beating the entire Xiaomi 18 lineup to the punch. That’s a telling sign for anyone expecting an early arrival, and it lines up neatly with the August 2026 window the rumor mill keeps pointing to.

The reason it can jump the queue is simple: it doesn’t have to wait on anyone. While the Xiaomi 18 family is tied to Qualcomm’s next-gen silicon, the Mix Fold 5 runs Xiaomi’s own Xring O3 SoC — the substantially reworked successor to last year’s O1. Building the chip in-house means Xiaomi controls its own launch calendar, and the timing hints suggest the company intends to use that freedom. The model number points to an August debut, Xiaomi Day has historically fallen on August 8, and the Mix Fold 3 arrived back in August 2023. The pattern is hard to ignore.

On the hardware front, this is shaping up to be a proper heavyweight. The main event is a flexible 7.5- to 7.6-inch inner display built with Xiaomi’s seamless-crease technology, aimed squarely at that persistent foldable annoyance — the visible fold line down the middle. If it delivers, unfolding the Mix Fold 5 should feel closer to using a genuine tablet than a phone with a scar.

Imaging looks equally serious. A 200MP main camera headlines the setup, promising the kind of detail and cropping flexibility that turns a folding phone from a novelty into a daily driver. Powering all of it is a 6,000 mAh battery with wireless charging — a generous cell for a device with two screens to feed.

Xiaomi is also addressing the durability question that has long dogged foldables. The Mix Fold 5 is said to offer full water resistance, a spec that used to be near-impossible on hinged designs, alongside a side-mounted fingerprint reader for quick, thumb-friendly unlocking.

Software duties fall to HyperOS 4.0, based on Android 17. A device spotted running the new build in the wild is usually a strong indicator that firmware work is well past the early stages — another data point in favor of a near-term release.

Here’s the catch for readers outside China: the Mix Fold 5 is currently expected to debut in China only. Pricing is pegged at roughly $1,400 USD (CNY 10,000), which puts it firmly in premium foldable territory but still undercuts some of its Western rivals.

Nothing is official until Xiaomi says so, and as of today the phone hasn’t launched. But between the early certification, the in-house chip, the leaked HyperOS build and Xiaomi’s own August tradition, the pieces are all pointing the same way.
