The Martian rockets back up Prime Video charts on a Nolan tailwind

Sometimes a movie doesn’t need a new trailer or a remaster to find a fresh audience — it just needs the right company. Ridley Scott’s The Martian, the survival epic that turned botany into an action sequence, is climbing Prime Video’s charts again, and the reason is refreshingly simple: Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has become a phenomenon, and viewers are chasing the through-line straight back to Matt Damon.

The connective tissue here is Damon himself. Fresh eyes drawn in by Nolan’s latest are rediscovering the actor’s earlier turn as stranded astronaut Mark Watney, and the algorithm is doing the rest. It’s the kind of organic resurgence streaming platforms live for — no marketing spend, just cultural momentum pointing people toward a film that already earned its stripes.

And what stripes they are. The Martian went on to gross more than $630 million worldwide, a staggering return that cemented Scott’s reputation for grounded, science-forward spectacle. Unlike a lot of prestige sci-fi, the film leaned hard into plausibility: orbital mechanics, resource math, and the grim arithmetic of keeping one man alive on a hostile planet. That’s exactly the flavor of storytelling that tends to age well, which is why a decade-old title can suddenly feel timely all over again.

There’s a neat symmetry to the whole situation. Nolan’s The Odyssey pulls audiences in with its own gravity, and that gravity slingshots them toward another Damon-led voyage — one about isolation, ingenuity, and getting home against impossible odds. If The Odyssey is about the long journey back, The Martian is the perfect companion piece: a different vessel, a different ocean of red dust, same relentless will to survive.

For anyone who missed it the first time — or who wants a refresher before diving deeper into Damon’s filmography — the timing couldn’t be better. Here’s why the film keeps working:

  • A grounded premise that treats hard science as a plot engine rather than set dressing.
  • Ridley Scott’s directorial control, balancing tension with unexpected humor.
  • A career-defining Matt Damon performance that anchors a mostly solo narrative.
  • Broad rewatchability, which is precisely why it thrives on streaming discovery.

The lesson for streaming watchers is a familiar one: catalog depth matters as much as new releases. A single hit can reactivate an entire back catalog, and right now The Martian is riding that wave. It’s proof that a great film never really goes away — it just waits for the right moment to trend again.

So if The Odyssey has you hungry for more high-stakes survival storytelling, Prime Video’s charts are quietly pointing the way. Follow Damon from one impossible journey to another, and you’ll understand exactly why hundreds of millions of dollars once flowed toward a movie about a man learning to grow potatoes on Mars.
