Google Cloud. How AI turned Alphabet's spending fears into a windfall
SHARE

For months, Alphabet investors fretted that the company was pouring money into AI faster than it could ever earn it back. The latest earnings report offers a firm rebuttal — and the numbers do most of the talking.

The headline figure: Google Cloud revenue jumped 82% year-over-year to $24.8 billion. That’s a sharp acceleration from the previous quarter’s 63% growth (which brought in $20 billion) and comfortably beats the $22.46 billion Wall Street had penciled in. Google credits the surge to enterprises snapping up its AI solutions and AI infrastructure — and it says the pipeline is only getting fatter, with a cloud contracting backlog now standing at a staggering $514 billion in work not yet booked as revenue.

Zoom out and the whole business is humming. Alphabet’s overall revenue climbed 24% year-over-year to $119.8 billion, while Google Services — the ads-and-search engine that still pays the bills — grew 15% to $94.5 billion. Profit, meanwhile, exploded to $112.1 billion, up from $28.1 billion a year earlier.

“Our AI investments are redefining what’s possible across every part of our business,” CEO Sundar Pichai told analysts on the earnings call. “We have exciting momentum across the board.”

That momentum extends to consumers, too. Gemini, Google’s AI chatbot, now claims 950 million monthly active users — a hefty jump from the 750 million reported back in Q4 of 2025. It’s the kind of adoption curve that makes the infrastructure bet look less like a gamble and more like a necessity.

And what a bet it is. Alphabet’s capital expenditures — the cash it spends on data centers, chips, and infrastructure — are estimated at between $180 billion and $190 billion for the year. Naturally, analysts wanted to know when all that concrete and silicon starts paying dividends.

Pichai pointed further down the road. “I think our compute capacity investments in ’27,” he said, before adding that demand signals are strong, including long-term deals. “If anything, the dynamics look healthier than where we were about a year ago, so that’s what gives us the confidence to undertake those investments.”

Context matters here. Blowout quarters are practically routine for Google — this marks its 12th consecutive quarter of double-digit revenue growth. But even against that lofty baseline, this stretch stands out as an unusually bountiful one.

The takeaway for skeptics: the spending is real, the backlog is enormous, and for now the cloud engine is converting AI hype into hard revenue faster than critics expected. Whether that pace holds through the 2027 capacity buildout is the next question — but Alphabet has, at least, bought itself some breathing room.
