Beat Gems. The visual history of drum machines gets its own coffee-table tome

If you’ve ever wondered how a beige box full of transistors ended up defining decades of popular music, there’s now a book for that. Beat Gems is a new coffee-table visual history of drum machines from publisher Bjooks, and it’s the latest project from musician and synth historian Oli Freke.

Freke isn’t a random name attached to a glossy cover. His writing has appeared in Sound on Sound, The Quietus, and Mixmag, and his back catalogue leans delightfully nerdy — including a piece using math to probe the melodic potential of the Western 12-tone scale and deep-dive investigations into effects plug-ins. He also authored a book charting the evolution of the synthesizer from 1963 through 1995, following the instrument’s messy migration from analog to digital and, eventually, back again.

Beat Gems applies that same historian’s eye to rhythm machines. Anyone familiar with Bjooks’ output knows the house style: heavyweight production values, page after page of lush photography, and enough archival detail to keep gear obsessives happy for hours. This title follows suit, pairing striking images of vintage and modern hardware with historical context about how each machine came to be — and why some of them accidentally rewrote entire genres.

What sets the Bjooks approach apart from a straight museum catalogue is the practical bent. Alongside the eye candy and the trivia, Beat Gems offers advice on getting the most out of your gear, so it functions as both a collector’s showpiece and a working reference. That’s a smart balance for a subject where the instruments in question are still very much in active use — drum machines never really became relics.

The timing feels right, too. Interest in classic beat boxes and their descendants has only grown as producers chase the tactile, hands-on workflow that hardware provides. A well-photographed history that treats these machines as design objects and cultural artifacts, rather than mere studio tools, scratches an itch that pure spec sheets never could.

For readers who came up on the thump of a specific silver-and-orange box or the crisp snap of a sample-based classic, Beat Gems promises the kind of visual storytelling that makes you want to dig your old hardware out of the closet — or start hunting for it on the secondhand market.

The full story is available at The Verge.
