The most influential science-fiction novel of the last four decades is heading to your screen. Apple TV used its Hall H slot at San Diego Comic Con to confirm that its long-gestating Neuromancer series — adapted from William Gibson’s 1984 novel that essentially invented the cyberpunk aesthetic — will premiere on January 22.
If you’ve ever pictured mirrored shades, console cowboys jacking into a neon lattice of data, or corporate arcologies looming over rain-slicked streets, you have Gibson to thank. His prose gave us the word cyberspace before the internet as we know it existed, and it seeded everything from The Matrix to countless video-game worlds. Turning that dense, sensory-overloaded text into television has defeated plenty of ambitious producers over the years, so a firm release date is genuinely a milestone.
Apple didn’t stop there. The streamer’s Comic Con appearance was stuffed with reveals, and two more caught our eye.
- Dark Matter, season 2 — a fresh trailer dropped for the return of the mind-bending multiverse thriller, which follows a man torn between infinite versions of his own life. The first season leaned hard into paranoid what-if scenarios, and the new footage suggests season 2 keeps twisting the knife.
- Matchbox — Apple also unveiled a new trailer for this upcoming feature. Yes, it’s a movie built around the die-cast toy cars, joining the growing pile of toy-brand adaptations chasing big-screen momentum.
It’s a telling lineup. Apple TV has spent years quietly assembling a prestige-leaning catalogue, and pairing a heavyweight literary adaptation like Neuromancer with returning genre favourites and a splashy brand-driven film shows the platform hedging across every audience at once — the cult sci-fi crowd, the binge-and-theorise streamers, and the family blockbuster market.
The bigger question, as always with Gibson, is fidelity. Neuromancer lives or dies on atmosphere: the grimy technology, the moral murk, the sense that the future arrived and forgot to be glamorous. Nail that texture and Apple has a defining series on its hands. Miss it, and it’s just another slick streaming show wearing borrowed shades. We’ll find out on January 22.
