Pokemon Red & Blue Dramatic Shape mod. Kanto reborn in blocky 3D glory

Kanto has never looked quite like this. A new mod called Dramatic Shape takes the original Pokemon Red and Blue and rebuilds their flat, tile-based world into fully realized voxel scenes — the kind of chunky, cube-based 3D that turns Pallet Town and Route 1 into something you’d want to walk around rather than just stroll through on a grid.

The trick here isn’t emulation or a fan remake built from scratch. Dramatic Shape rides on top of the Pokemon Gen 1 Recompilation Project, a community effort that decompiles and recompiles the original Game Boy code into a form modern hardware can run natively. That foundation is what makes ambitious visual overhauls like this one possible: instead of hacking sprites inside the confines of a 1996 cartridge, developers can reshape how the game renders altogether.

The result reinterprets towns, routes and building interiors as voxel dioramas. Rooftops, trees, ledges and NPCs get real geometry and depth, giving the whole region a diorama-in-a-toybox feel. It’s a look that suits the source material surprisingly well — Gen 1’s boxy overworld art practically begs to be extruded into three dimensions, and voxels keep that pixel-art soul intact while adding volume and shadow.

A few things worth setting expectations on:

  • It’s a fan mod, not an official product. There’s no Nintendo or Game Freak stamp here, and no store page — this is community work distributed through GitHub.
  • It’s free and open-source. No price tag, no launcher, no microtransactions. You bring the effort of setting it up; the mod brings the visuals.
  • It launched on July 28, 2026. That makes this a brand-new arrival, and like most decomp-based projects it’s likely to keep evolving as contributors pile on.

What’s clever about the approach is how it treats the recompilation project as a platform. Once a game’s logic lives in modern, readable code, the door opens to layering on features that were unthinkable on original hardware — new perspectives, richer lighting, expanded graphical detail — without rewriting the underlying game the world already knows by heart. Dramatic Shape is essentially a proof of what that ecosystem can do when someone with a strong art direction gets their hands on it.

For anyone who grew up grinding levels in Viridian Forest or plotting the exact route through Rock Tunnel, seeing that same map rendered in tactile 3D blocks is a genuine jolt of nostalgia refracted through modern tooling. It’s not a replacement for the originals, and it’s not trying to be — it’s a love letter that asks a simple question: what if Kanto had depth?

Given how quickly community decomp projects tend to snowball, Dramatic Shape may be the first of many overhauls that give the classic Pokemon world a genuinely new dimension.
