Tamron 25-200mm F/2.8-5.6 Di III VXD G2. A firmware update that thinks like macro glass

Here’s a rare treat in the camera world: your existing lens gets meaningfully better without you spending a cent on new glass. Tamron has just rolled out Firmware Version 3 for its 25-200mm F/2.8-5.6 Di III VXD G2 (Model A075), and it does something you don’t usually see from a software patch — it dramatically improves close-focus performance.

The headline change is magnification. Across the popular 35-50mm range, the lens now hits a maximum magnification ratio of 1:1.7, a substantial jump from the previous 1:3.1. Even better, Tamron says you now get 1:2 half-macro or greater across the entire 25-70mm focal range. In practice that means you can lean in far closer to your subject — flowers, food, product details — and fill more of the frame, all with the same optical formula you already own.

It’s worth pausing on how unusual this is. Close-focus and magnification are typically dictated by physical optics, so wringing extra reach out of firmware alone is a neat piece of engineering. Tamron released the update on July 29, 2026, and it’s available now.

The lens itself has been a compelling all-rounder since it went on sale on November 20, 2025, following its announcement on October 21, 2025. The appeal is obvious: an 8× zoom range that runs from a bright 25mm at F/2.8 out to 200mm, packed into a body that measures just 121.5mm (4.8 inches) long and tips the scales at 575 grams (20.3 oz). That’s a genuinely travel-friendly package for a lens that covers wide-angle through telephoto in a single mount.

The one-lens-does-everything category has been quietly maturing for years. Fixed-lens superzooms like the Sony RX10 V long demonstrated the convenience of never swapping glass, and Tamron’s approach brings that same do-it-all spirit to interchangeable-lens systems — with the added flexibility of a proper camera body behind it.

What makes this firmware release stand out is the value proposition. At US$ 899, the 25-200mm G2 already offered a lot of versatility per dollar. Adding usable half-macro capability across the wide-to-standard range effectively hands owners a new shooting mode for free. You point the same lens at a landscape, then crouch down for a tight detail shot, without carrying anything extra or reaching for a dedicated macro.

The takeaway is refreshingly simple: if you already own the A075, download Firmware Version 3, and enjoy a lens that’s more capable today than the one you bought. If you don’t, this is a strong reminder that Tamron is still supporting — and improving — its glass well after launch. That kind of long-tail commitment is exactly what buyers should be rewarding.
