Disney+ Premium. Paying more for less when the courts intervene

Here’s a scenario no streaming subscriber wants to live through: you’re paying for the top tier, and one morning the picture quality you signed up for simply vanishes. That’s exactly what’s happening to Disney+ Premium customers across parts of Europe, where the service has stripped out 4K UHD and HDR support, as first reported by FlatpanelsHD.

The affected regions include Germany, the Netherlands, France and Poland, along with the Nordic and Baltic markets that were hit earlier. UK viewers, thankfully, are untouched — we confirmed on our own Disney+ Premium subscription that 4K and HDR remain intact here.

For the unlucky subscribers, the downgrade is brutal. The Premium tier — which previously delivered Ultra HD, Dolby Vision and HDR10+ — has been knocked back to basic 1080p Standard Dynamic Range (SDR). That’s a full step down from the format most premium buyers explicitly pay extra for.

And here’s the sting: the price hasn’t budged. Disney+ Premium still costs €15.99 a month in Europe (and £14.99 in the UK, where the Standard tier sits at £9.99). So affected customers are now paying a premium fee for features they physically cannot access, with no word yet on compensation.

Disney is describing the change as “temporary”, pinning it on a court ruling. “Following a recent court ruling affecting the technology we use to deliver 4K UHD and HDR, we have temporarily removed support for 4K UHD and HDR on Disney+,” the company’s Nordic & Baltic arm told FlatpanelsHD. “We are disappointed and share our customers’ frustration. We are working hard to restore support as quickly as possible.”

This isn’t the first legal headache to hit the platform. Back in mid-June 2026, Disney+ pulled Dolby Vision and 3D support over a patent dispute — that one traced back to a Unified Patent Court (UPC) decision in Europe involving US firm InterDigital. Both features were later restored, which offers a glimmer of hope that 4K and HDR will eventually return too. But “temporary” comes with no timeline, and no guarantees.

What makes this genuinely uncomfortable is the precedent. Streaming customers don’t own the picture quality they pay for — they rent access to it, and that access can be revoked overnight by a legal ruling neither party can fully control. A 4K Blu-ray disc, by contrast, doesn’t get downgraded after you’ve bought it. Once it’s on the shelf, it stays exactly as sharp as the day you unwrapped it.

It’s a stark reminder of the trade-off at the heart of streaming: convenience and vast catalogues on one side, zero permanence and total dependence on the provider’s legal fortunes on the other. For now, European Premium subscribers are footing the bill for that lesson.
