Leica Q Series. The compact that quietly outsells the legend
SHARE

Here’s a plot twist worth savoring: the camera that keeps Leica’s registers ringing isn’t the iconic M-System rangefinder that defined the brand for generations. It’s the Q series — the full-frame compact with a fixed lens that has become Leica’s true commercial engine.

Speaking at Leica’s Wetzlar headquarters on August 4, 2026, Andrea Pacella, the company’s VP of global marketing and communications, put it plainly: “The Q series cameras sell twice as much, or even more, than the entire M system.” For a company whose identity is practically stitched to the red-dot rangefinder, that’s a striking admission — and a telling snapshot of how photographers actually shop in 2026.

The appeal isn’t hard to decode. The M asks you to commit: manual focus, a philosophy, a certain patience. The Q offers the Leica look with far fewer compromises. Take the current flagship, the Leica Q3, which arrived in 2023. It pairs a 60MP full-frame CMOS sensor with a fixed 28mm Summilux f/1.7 ASPH lens, then layers on the kind of modern conveniences purists once scoffed at:

  • Phase-detect autofocus — a genuine leap for a brand long associated with manual precision
  • 8K video recording
  • A tilting LCD for awkward angles
  • Wireless charging via an optional handgrip

If 28mm feels too wide, Leica has an answer. The Q3 43, released on September 26, 2024, swaps in a 43mm APO aspherical f/2 lens while keeping the same 60MP full-frame CMOS sensor. That focal length lands close to the way the human eye frames a scene — a favorite among photographers who want a more natural, reportage feel without the wide-angle drama.

None of this comes cheap, of course. The Q3 sits at US$7,350, while both the Q3 43 and the black-and-white-only Q3 Monochrom command US$7,950. These are luxury objects as much as tools, and the market clearly agrees.

The revelation surfaced during Leica’s presentations around the launch of its newest SL-Series model, the Leica SL3-P, where the company walked through the state of its broader lineup. That the Q outsells the M by a factor of two or more says something about where the brand’s future momentum lies — not in nostalgia, but in a pocketable full-frame camera that delivers Leica rendering with autofocus, video, and a screen that flips.

The M will always be the soul of the company. But if you’re tracking which Leica people actually carry out the door, the answer wears a fixed lens and points-and-shoots its way to the top of the sales chart.
