TAD ME1TX. A compact bookshelf speaker with a beryllium heart

Great sound doesn’t always demand a floorstanding tower the size of a filing cabinet. TAD’s ME1TX makes that case emphatically, packing serious high-end engineering into a compact, beautifully finished bookshelf enclosure that punches far above its footprint.

The centerpiece is a 9 cm Coherent Source Transducer (CST) driver, TAD’s concentric design that mounts the tweeter at the acoustic center of the midrange cone. That tweeter is a 25 mm beryllium dome — a material prized for being stiff yet feather-light, which lets it stay composed well beyond the range of ordinary metals. Together the CST unit covers a frequency range from 420 Hz to 60 kHz, keeping the crucial midrange and treble radiating from a single, time-aligned point. The payoff is the kind of pinpoint imaging and spatial coherence that make voices and instruments feel like they occupy real space rather than hovering vaguely between two boxes.

Below that, a 16 cm woofer handles the low end, giving the ME1TX weight and body without the bulk of a larger cabinet. It’s a two-way arrangement that leans on precision rather than brute driver count.

The electrical numbers hint at the ME1TX’s ambitions — and its appetite. Sensitivity sits at 85 dB/W/m with a 4-ohm nominal impedance, which is a polite way of saying these are not speakers you feed with a budget receiver. They want a capable, current-happy amplifier to open up and reveal the resolution TAD built into them. Pair them properly and the reward is detail retrieval that borders on forensic, delivered with a naturalness that never tips into fatigue.

TAD, or Technical Audio Devices Laboratories, has long occupied the rarefied end of the audio world, and the ME1TX slots neatly into that tradition. It’s the sort of speaker that rewards obsessive listening — the kind where you rediscover recordings you thought you knew inside out.

The ME1TX was unveiled on January 30, 2024, and reached its global release in April 2025, so it’s a known quantity on dealer shelves today. Pricing reflects the pedigree:

  • US$18,200 for the black finish
  • US$19,200 for the silver finish

That’s a substantial sum for a pair of bookshelf speakers, but the ME1TX isn’t chasing value-per-liter. It’s chasing the illusion that the recording is happening in your room — and by most accounts, it gets uncomfortably close.
