Amazon Games. The retail giant walks away from the MMO business for good

The world’s biggest online retailer is officially done trying to run persistent online worlds. Amazon has confirmed it is fully stepping back from massively multiplayer online games, offloading live operations of its two Western-published titles and letting a third fade out. It’s the endgame of a strategy shift that began back in October 2025, when Amazon warned it would halt “a significant amount” of its first-party AAA work, “specifically around MMOs.”

Here’s how the handovers break down:

  • Throne and Liberty — live operations move to FirstSpark Games and NC in Q4 2026.
  • Lost Ark — Smilegate takes the reins in early 2027.

Both games are essentially returning home. Lost Ark and Throne and Liberty were originally built by their respective South Korean studios, with Amazon acting as the Western publisher — the company that kept servers running, handled patches, ran storefronts and dealt with player-facing operations on this side of the world. That publishing role is what’s being passed back.

The third title in Amazon’s MMO stable never got a graceful exit. When the October strategy shift landed, the team behind New World: Aeternum announced it would stop shipping new content updates. Since January, the game has effectively been on life support, and its servers are scheduled to go dark on January 31, 2027. For a game that once anchored Amazon’s ambitions in the genre, that’s a quiet fade rather than a triumphant sendoff.

There was supposed to be more. Amazon’s much-hyped Lord of the Rings MMO, one of the projects that fueled excitement about the company’s gaming push, has been cancelled outright. Middle-earth, it turns out, will not be getting the sprawling Amazon-run online world some fans had been waiting years for.

It’s a notable retreat for a company that spent years and reportedly enormous sums positioning itself as a serious force in AAA development. MMOs are famously brutal to operate — they demand constant content, relentless server maintenance, live-service teams and a player base that has to keep showing up for years. Getting one to launch is hard; keeping one profitable is harder still. Amazon clearly decided the math no longer added up.

For players, the practical takeaway is straightforward: Throne and Liberty and Lost Ark aren’t dying, they’re just changing landlords, moving to studios that arguably understand them better than a retail conglomerate ever did. New World fans, meanwhile, have a firm expiration date to plan around. The bigger picture is that one of tech’s deepest-pocketed players tried to crack the MMO business — and has now, definitively, tapped out.
