Self-driving trucks aren’t just a Silicon Valley fantasy anymore — they’re rolling into one of Europe’s biggest commercial vehicle makers. DAF Trucks, the Dutch arm of PACCAR, is integrating Einride Driver, Einride’s autonomous driving software, into its electric heavy-duty platform. The goal is nothing less than scaling driverless electric freight on real roads.
The vehicles at the heart of this effort are the DAF XG and XG+ Electric, the same models recently crowned International Truck of the Year 2026. That’s a meaningful pairing: rather than bolting autonomy onto an aging diesel chassis, Einride is building its software around a battery-electric platform that’s already proven itself against the competition.
The target here is SAE Level 4 autonomy. In plain terms, that means the truck can independently handle repetitive driving tasks under predefined conditions — think fixed routes, depots, and industrial corridors — without a human intervening. It’s not the everywhere-anytime dream of Level 5, but for logistics operators running the same lanes day after day, Level 4 is where the real efficiency lives.
To get there, Einride isn’t going it alone. The collaboration brings in TNO, the Netherlands’ applied research organization, to help validate the safety case and the technical groundwork. That kind of third-party research muscle matters when you’re talking about multi-ton vehicles moving autonomously among human-driven traffic.
As of now, the project is firmly in its development phase. Throughout 2026, the partners are running initial tests and validating the key interfaces between Einride’s software stack and DAF’s electric hardware — the plumbing that lets the Driver actually talk to the truck’s steering, braking, and power systems. The heavier lifting comes next: integration and commissioning of the autonomous driving software is planned for 2027.
Why does this matter beyond the trucking world? Autonomous freight has long been pitched as one of the most commercially viable near-term applications for self-driving tech. Freight corridors are predictable, the economics are brutal, and the driver shortage is real. Combine that with electric drivetrains and you get a package that appeals to both fleet accountants and sustainability officers at once.
