Samsung Wallet. Your Galaxy phone is now a key for VW's electric ID lineup
SHARE

Fumbling for a key fob is starting to feel very last decade. As of August 18, 2026, Samsung Wallet gained Digital Key support for Volkswagen’s electric ID models, letting a compatible Galaxy smartphone lock, unlock and start the car — no physical key required.

The feature rolled out across 37 European countries, covering a healthy slice of the ID family: the ID. Polo, ID. Cross, ID.3neo, ID.4, ID.5, ID.7 and the boxy-cool ID. Buzz. The catch — and it’s an important one — is that eligibility is narrow. Your car needs to be running ID software version 6.0.1, and only vehicles produced on or after April 27, 2026 qualify. On top of that, the car has to have been ordered with the “Preparation for Digital Key” option package. Miss any of those boxes and the Wallet integration simply won’t be available.

What makes this more than a party trick is the tech underneath. Samsung’s implementation leans on two complementary radios. Ultra-wideband (UWB) handles hands-free entry, sensing the phone’s precise location as you approach so the doors can respond without you touching anything. NFC covers the tap-based fallback — hold the phone to the car to unlock and start it, handy when the battery is low or you’d rather do things the deliberate way.

There’s a bonus for anyone hauling luggage: the trunk can be opened through Remote Key Entry, so you can pop the boot from the phone rather than digging out a fob mid-load.

The appeal here is obvious. A Digital Key living in Samsung Wallet means one less thing to carry, and for households juggling shared vehicles it’s far easier to manage than a drawer full of spare fobs. It also slots the ID lineup into the growing club of cars that treat your phone as the primary credential rather than an afterthought — a shift that’s steadily becoming the norm across premium and mainstream EVs alike.

A few practical caveats are worth keeping in mind. Because this is Wallet-based, you’ll want a compatible Galaxy device, and the roll-out is currently a European affair. The strict production cut-off of April 27, 2026 also means existing ID owners can’t retrofit the capability — this is aimed at fresh builds carrying the right hardware prep and the 6.0.1 software.

Still, for the right buyer this is a genuinely useful upgrade rather than a gimmick. UWB proximity unlocking is the kind of feature you stop noticing precisely because it just works, and having it baked into a wallet app you already use daily removes the friction that dooms so many connected-car ideas. If you’re speccing a new ID model right now, ticking the Digital Key preparation box looks like an easy call.
