Bumble Ditches Women-First Rule. The App That Rewrote Dating Now Rewrites Itself

The app that built its entire brand on making women message first has just handed that job to everyone. As of this week, Bumble lets any user send the opening message, retiring the trademark feature it launched with back in December 2014. It’s a quiet demolition of the company’s founding idea — and a loud signal about how brutal the dating-app market has become.

The mechanics are simple. The new opening-message concept rolled out to all users globally on Tuesday, and Bumble has stretched the response window from 24 hours to 72 hours. On paper, that means less pressure and more time to reply. In practice, plenty of longtime users are bracing for a flood.

“Men will swipe on anybody and see what sticks. And with this change, they are just going to be reaching out to everybody,” one 53-year-old user in Orlando told WIRED, describing an inbox that filled with unwanted attention within a day of the announcement. Online, critics have rebranded the app “Yellow Tinder” — a jab at its logo — and warned the change invites harassment. “I’m not going to use an app that makes me feel like prey,” one wrote on X.

Bumble’s counterargument leans on its own data: the company says 66 percent of women it surveyed prefer men to send the first message, framing the shift as stress relief rather than surrender. Some users agree. But even supporters concede the original rule was more symbolic than protective — saying “hey” first never stopped anyone from following up with something creepy.

The bigger story is market physics. Growth across Big Dating is stalling. Match Group’s August 2026 results showed Tinder’s daily active users down 4 percent year over year, while Hinge’s global monthly active users rose 13 percent over the same stretch. Everyone is now throwing features at the wall to stay relevant:

  • Feeld, once a kink-and-polyamory niche app, chased mainstream users and saw a 200 percent user spike in 2025 — at the cost of a vibe some describe as “normie hell.”
  • Grindr has morphed into a digital gated community, layering in luxury travel, GLP-1 and ED prescriptions, and AI matchmaking, while charging up to $500 for its top-tier Edge membership.

Bumble, privately owned and reportedly exploring a sale, is walking the same road: taking a once-distinctive product and turning it into a for-everybody service with pay-gated basics. The retreat from its women-first mission didn’t happen overnight, either. The 2024 Opening Moves feature already let men reply to prompts, and analysts note the app stopped marketing its social mission in the US back in 2023.

Bumble says early testing showed more chats being started. Whether that translates into more actual dates — or just more unwanted messages — is the open question. As one researcher put it, an app is only a small part of a much larger system of human behavior. You can design great intentions into the code. You just can’t control how people use it.
