SNES at 35. Five oddball classics worth revisiting on Switch Online

The Super Nintendo Entertainment System is turning 35 in 2025, and if you’ve got a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, the celebration is already sitting in your library. Beyond the big-name platformers and RPGs everyone remembers, the SNES catalogue hides a strange, wonderful undergrowth of experimental oddities — games that could only have come from an era when 16-bit developers were still figuring out what the hardware could do.

That’s where the fun really starts. The Switch Online SNES app is stuffed with the obvious icons, but the deeper you dig, the weirder it gets — and that weirdness is precisely what makes the machine’s back catalogue worth another look three and a half decades on.

What counts as weird here? Think titles that bend genre conventions, lean into surreal art direction, or simply do something no other game of the period dared to attempt. These are the releases that got overshadowed by the mega-sellers but have aged into cult curiosities — the kind of thing you fire up out of sheer curiosity and end up playing for an hour longer than planned.

The appeal of the Switch Online model is that it removes the barrier to entry entirely. There’s no hunting for a battered cartridge on the second-hand market, no dodgy emulation setup, no compatibility headaches. If it’s in the app, it’s a couple of taps away — which makes it the perfect environment for taking a punt on something unusual.

A few reasons the SNES library rewards the adventurous:

  • Rewind and save states take the sting out of the era’s notoriously brutal difficulty spikes, so the more obtuse experiments are actually playable today.
  • No commitment — since these games come bundled with the subscription, there’s zero risk in trying something you’d never have bought at full price back in the day.
  • Preservation matters — many of these oddities never saw wide release outside Japan, and having them officially available keeps a slice of gaming history alive.

The SNES has always been celebrated for its heavyweight hitters, but part of what made it a landmark console was its willingness to give strange ideas a home. Mode 7 pseudo-3D, quirky co-op experiments and genre mash-ups all flourished on the platform, and it’s those left-field entries that best capture the creative chaos of the 16-bit boom.

So if you’re marking the machine’s 35th birthday, skip the greatest-hits reruns for an evening and go spelunking through the odd corners of the app instead. The classics will still be there tomorrow. The genuinely weird stuff — the games that made the SNES feel like a playground for wild ideas — deserves a moment in the spotlight too.
