Bali Nyepi Case. When one Instagram Story lands you a year in jail

Here’s a cautionary tale for anyone who treats a phone camera as a passport to film anything, anywhere: a 26-year-old Swiss tourist has been sentenced to one year in jail in Bali for posting a video shot during the island’s sacred Day of Silence.

Luzian Andrin Zgraggen, a construction worker from Switzerland, was convicted on August 21 at the Denpasar District Court of insulting a religious observance under Indonesia’s new criminal code. The offense carries a maximum of five years’ imprisonment, but the court cited his young age and good behavior during proceedings as mitigating factors, landing on the one-year term.

The trigger was a single Instagram Story. Zgraggen arrived in Bali on February 10 for a vacation, and hotel staff briefed him on the restrictions ahead of Nyepi, the Hindu holiday that fell on March 19 this year. During Nyepi, the Hindu-majority island effectively powers down for 24 hours: work, travel, public entertainment and even electricity use are discouraged, lights stay dim, noise is minimized, and both locals and tourists are expected to remain in their homes or hotels for quiet meditation.

Frustrated that he couldn’t leave the hotel to find food, Zgraggen filmed himself walking to an empty beach, smiling at the camera and calling the scene “crazy.” He captioned it with expletives and posted it to his Story.

He deleted the clip, but the internet doesn’t forget. Screen-grabbed and re-uploaded, the footage spread widely and drew condemnation from Balinese residents who found it disrespectful. Authorities tracked him down following public complaints and arrested him at a villa in Legian, near Kuta Beach.

In his defense, Zgraggen told the court he never meant to insult Nyepi or the Balinese people, saying he acted out of hunger and frustration and hadn’t grasped how sweeping the restrictions were. “I deeply regret what I did. I apologize to the Balinese people,” he said in his plea.

For our readers, the takeaway is less about legal nuance and more about how a camera behaves in the wrong context. A phone is always ready to record, always one tap from a public share, and the delete button is meaningless once someone else has a screenshot. What felt like a throwaway travel clip became a permanent, distributed piece of evidence.

It also fits a broader pattern. Indonesian authorities have been tightening enforcement around photographers and videographers in Bali, including creators traveling on tourist visas and shooting content even when they aren’t being paid for it. The lesson for anyone packing a camera or vlogging their holidays: local rules around religious observance aren’t decoration, and “I didn’t know” is a weak defense once your footage is trending.
