Netflix September 2026. 52 new movies and a 97% shark leading them all

Streaming libraries usually grow by drip feed. This one arrived by the truckload: Netflix is adding 52 movies in September 2026, and it did not wait around to do it. 40 of those films landed on the first day of the month, with the rest being handed out periodically across the rest of September.

Fifty-two titles is a lot of scrolling, so the useful question is which ones critics actually rate. Sorted by Rotten Tomatoes score, the top five make for an unusually strong month — three genre landmarks, one art-house obsession and one music biopic.

  • Jaws (1975) — 97%. Steven Spielberg’s shark thriller is the highest-scoring film in the batch, and the one that turned the word “blockbuster” into an industry category.
  • Alien (1979) — 93%. Directed by Ridley Scott, still the reference point for claustrophobic science fiction horror.
  • Aliens (1986) — 93%. James Cameron matched his predecessor’s score by doing the opposite thing, swapping dread for firepower.
  • Phantom Thread (2017) — 91%. Paul Thomas Anderson teams with previous collaborator Daniel Day-Lewis for a period romance that is far stranger than its costumes suggest.
  • Straight Outta Compton (2015) — 89%. The N.W.A. biopic rounds out the five.

What is striking about the list is how top-heavy it is with catalogue cinema. Four of the five are more than nine years old, and two of them are nearly half a century old. That is the licensing market doing its job: studios rotate deep archives through streaming platforms in bulk, which is why a single month can deliver a 1975 Spielberg and a 2017 Paul Thomas Anderson side by side.

It also makes for an accidental double feature that is hard to beat. Having Alien and Aliens land in the same window, tied at 93%, is the rare case where the sequel debate can be settled in one evening without changing services or paying twice. The pairing is a neat illustration of how differently two directors can treat the same premise — one film keeps the monster off screen for as long as possible, the other builds an entire second act around not being able to avoid it.

For anyone trying to triage 52 titles, the practical approach is simple. The five above are the critical high-water marks of the month; the remaining 47 are a mix of comedies, horror sequels and mainstream hits that arrived alongside them. Most of the month’s volume was front-loaded onto September 1, 2026, so the library is already stocked rather than trickling in.
